If you request a chat, you'll need to state your purpose.  I ONLY take chats from those working on recovery from eating disorders and trauma (with PTSD & Dissociation) and those making decision on college and careers  I am not available to chat real-time any longer, but we can message back and forth.

I spend most of my support time in the Eating Disorder community due to my time limitations of committing to long-term chats.  https://www.7cups.com/forum/eds/

I love life.  I enjoy helping.  My focus is recovery from abuse and sexual trauma, eating disorders and dissociation.  I have interests in university internships and career development.

I am a Christian and that gives me strength. If you are wanting faith-based support, please let me know. I know that for some individuals, Christians have been very hurtful. If you are not a Christian, I'm not here to judge or impose my spiritual beliefs - I'm here to listen. I will not talk to you about God unless you ask to talk about faith.  I do not take theological chats.

Friends & Family - How to Respond
Eating Disorder Support / by KristenHR

...See more How Friends & Family Can Respond Many times it's difficult to know how to respond to the person you know with an eating disorder.  There are things that we can say that help and things we can say that hinders and can really trigger someone.  Let's look at these factors on how to respond to someone with an eating disorder when we have concerns or we want to be supportive. What to Say to be Supportive * What is validating and encouraging for individuals to hear when they are struggling to eat or struggling to stop the binge or purge cycle? * What is validating for an individual who is struggling with an eating disorder when you see there is something to acknowledge is difficult or successful? * How can we be as supportive as possible for the individual who is struggling? It can be helpful to ask the individual how to support them best. Eating disorders obviously focus on food and for most, body image, but is much deeper than this.  Understanding what other issues are going on is important, as much as they are willing to discuss with you. What Not to Say * What would be triggering to an individual with an eating disorder that would perpetuate the eating disorder? * What comments are not meant to be hurtful but are hurtful to someone with an eating disorder? * How can making a statement about someone's body impact their eating disorder? It's important to know that telling someone that they have gained or lost weight as well as commenting on someone's body shape can be very triggering to someone with an eating disorder.  It's not just necessarily having difficulty with feelings, but can actually be taken as confirmation of their eating disorder behavior or that they need to increase their eating disorder behavior. Avoiding commenting on how much or little someone with an eating disorder is eating is important.  If they are under the care of a professional, they likely have a meal plan.  Unless you are part of their care team, you may not be privy to what their meal plan is and how much they are supposed to eat or what they are to eat and why at this time they should be eating.  If you are part of their care team, being aware of how to share encouragement or challenges if they aren't eating according to their meal plan. For those of you who have an eating disorder, please share what is helpful and not helpful to say.  Please share why it is or isn't helpful so that our loved ones can understand better about communicating concerns and help. What are your thoughts?
Recovery Plan

March 6th
...See more When realizing that you have an eating disorder, it's important to think about how to work on recovery.  That means looking at some things that are needed to start to get a handle on what you can, and getting help for what you need assistance for.  * What do you want with recovery?  What do you want to do when you are in recovery? * Who can you reach out to that is part of your support system?  This can be family, friends, physician, therapist, support group or others. * Where can you go to help you make good choices rather than using eating disorder behaviors?  Think about places that help you to feel safe, that are neutral places, and places where you wouldn't be alone. * What can you do to help you with distraction when you are feeling like acting on your eating disorder or behaviors?  These are things that you may enjoy, things that can keep your attention for a while, or things that help you to change your mood such as your favorite movie, a comic, or other things. * What are healthy coping skills you can utilize when you are feeling urges to give in to your eating disorder?  Examples are using distress tolerance skills, grounding skills when triggered, or what helps you when you are struggling. * What does your eating disorder voice typically tell you and what can you tell your eating disorder voice to counteract that? * What's one goal that you can work on toward your recovery this week? This is just a start of what you can put in a recovery plan, but there is so much more you can put in it.  Adding as many options and things as you can think of makes it more beneficial. If you want to share your thoughts here, that would be great, as it can help others who are thinking about their plan.

Holiday Triggers & Relapse Risks
Eating Disorder Support / by KristenHR
Last post
December 23rd, 2023
...See more As Hanukkah, Christmas, Boxing Day, Kwanzaa, and New Years days are upon us, we are surrounded with gatherings, activities and food.  This is a particularly difficult time in general if you have to spend time with people who may critical or toxic, or are opinionated about your eating or how much you eat. This is a time when it benefits to have someone who is supportive and understands about your eating disorder and the unique challenges you may have at this time of year who can help to ground you or even redirect conversations away from your eating or food to other topics. Maybe this is a time of loss and grief or difficult memories from trauma, which impacts your eating as well. How do you manage the triggers you experience at this time of the year?  What do you need to pay attention to with your risk of relapse with the progress you have made?  Some areas of relapse include: * Nutritional/weight/dietary * Behavioral * Emotional * Thoughts/Cognitions * Physical * Social/Relational/Interpersonal If you notice these as something you've been struggling with recently, what are some coping skills that you have or can pull back out that you've learned or has helped you in the past?  Some to consider: * Emotion Regulation * Distress Tolerance * Self-Care * Grounding * Mindfulness * CBT Skills * Humor * Gratitudes * Support system * Other things I'd love to hear your thoughts.
