Self Care Challenge

User Profile: AffyAvo
AffyAvo June 29th, 2019

When it comes to chronic illnesses, conditions or other disabilities we often have extra self care responsibilities such as medication management, physiotherapy, maintaining the sites of implanted devices, etc.

If you share a self-care activity you do a minimum of 3x/week for the month of July you can recieve the Self Care Badge.

Acceptable activities include all things self care - whether it's more on the medical side, or just taking some time out to look after youself.

Submit responses with this form but you are also welcome to share in this thread!

probably my biggest one is trying to remember to take a birth control pill every day... It really shouldn't be that hard, and people do it all the time to prevent pregnancies so using it to reduce adenomeiosis pain should be no biggie, but gosh darn if i forget even one pill I'll know it because the next day I'll be vomiting, and im a pretty forgetful person...

I remembered to take it again today, and I consider each pill take a tiny victory towards less pain and not barfing XD even if i don't have the motivation to make meals or change out of pajamas i try to at least do that

@TrueArrow I always use the app to get on 7cups. I'll try on the laptop next time i get a chance.

@ReclusiveReptile

Ah okay! I always use the website, instead of the app. Throughout the years I've been with 7cup, I've seen a lot of glitches with the app. Can't guarantee that your experience is one of them, but it doesn't hurt to try going through the site to see. Good luck! :)

@ReclusiveReptile If you can't get the form to work, we can count your posts here. Taking medication can be an important form of self care and I think many people find it challenging to get into the habit.

week 1/5 of July, post 1/3 this week

oof. day 1 of fixing my sleep schedule with sleeptown app. Went to bed at 1:00am and woke at 10:30 instead of going to bed by 3am and waking at 6pm. Hopefully within 2 weeks will have it feel natural and not like I'm dying of sleep deprivation to get 8-9 hours XD idk if this is self care or tough love our both but I'm counting it.

Week 1/5, post 2/3

Did a bunch of laundry. again. It's really hard keeping up bedding washing when wetting becomes more frequent, but it's just gotta be done to keep clean...

Though treated myself after with tv and doggy cuddles on the nice warm blanket ♡ so cozy

week 1/5 post 3/3

Today I went to church even though my brain wanted me to go back to sleep because the difficulty adjusting to a sleep schedule, and I feel glad that I did. He talked about the guilt that people can feel when they don't do all the things they feel like "good Christians" should do, like not praying before every meal, and he pointed out that the Bible never says we have to do those specific things, and it's the relationship that matters more than the ritual. He went on to give a lot of encouragement, and I really appreciated and enjoyed it all. I also felt like the music at the beginning helped wake me up, and i was a lot more productive with a good start than if I'd slept 15 hours like i felt the impulse to haha

Also, i splurged $10 and got those beads you melt together to make plastic pixel art and I've been making tiny gifts for friends and family (though while making a tiny angel for my mother she started yelling at my father for stuff he did wrong 11 years ago, so that was frustrating considering what i was currently trying to do)

....finger slipped and hit send to soon haha

so anyway, week 2/5 Post 2/3

i spent quite a while washing and then sewing up my old jacket. There were holes all over so i spent some time listening to an anime while fixing it. Now I won't be cold at night on the trip ^-^

I've also been very good this week about taking my pill, so i haven't been nauseous, and that's always nice. I've been less good about making sure the bed wetting alarm is plugged in and on each night... that thing is a pain... but I've been trying.

swimming is an activity I love because it doesnt cause more pain - even it allow me to do some good stretchings that i can't do normally, so it helps to ease pain.

I have two medications that I take every day ... one is an SSRI antidepressant and the other is an antimigraine medication. These meds have greatly helped offset, and for the most part, eliminate, the debilitating dizzy attacks I was having where I could barely walk from my condo to the bus stops that were 4 city blocks away without feeling like I was either tipping on a boat or gonna pass out. I had other hypoglycemia and panic attack like symptoms along with that, but since starting those meds, I've been able to go all around the city. yes

Which is good, because one of the things I try to do for self-care is get out of the house, even if I might not always feel like doing so, and get together with friends from my MeetUp groups for meals and laughing. Almost all of these mmetups are taking place on the north side, so I have to take public transportation to get there cheaply (which involves ... yep, doing a good amount of walking to and from, also - which I struggled with when having the full-on panic attacks and dizzy episodes). I can't say that I can get to an event 3 times a week due to my work schedule but if I'm off of work the next day, then I'll go after work, or go to an event on the weekend. smiley

I also make it a point to reward myself for a job well done, or if I'd just got through a busy and draining workday. yes Sometimes, if I have a doctors appointment in the morning, I'll go to breakfast somewhere after the appointment. yeslaugh

@niceDaisy36 Thanks!

I'm glad you were able to relax after working. Getting a thyroid condition under control can take a fair bit of trial and error from what understand, so that's great the meds have it where it should be!
