Weekend Check In For May 9th to May 11th 2025

Do you ever wonder what the difference in listening and hearing are? Listening is active attention being able to hear what a person is saying to you. Hearing is when we pay attention to what is said by listening. But you can hear something without listening where it is the opposite for listening. You listen to hearing sounds listening to birds chirp or cars outside a window but to listen takes time and effort because your carefully listening to what is being said to you.

Difference in listening and hearing:

Listening:

1. active

2. voluntary

3. requires effort

4. intentional perception of sound

Hearing:

1. passive

2. involuntary

3. requires no effort

4. physcological perception of sound

When we are fully present in the moment both mind and body is practiced by:

practicing mindfulness - mindfulness is being present to what is being said directly to youj

put away distractions: turning the sound off a radio or t.v. and actively giving attention to the person.

use of non-verbal gestures: this is making eye contact to the other person speaking, looking at them in the eye rather wondering around them.

When listening to someone speaking are you clearly hearing what their saying?

Hearing is subconscious.

Listening is conscious.

Active listening includes some effort or action that prioritises the other person.

I always try my very best to be fully present and "walk in their shoes" but still learning in some areas.

@pamharley003

I

Listening requires: attentiveness.

Mirroring back to them what they are saying.

Not trying to tell them what they are thinking or feeling.

Not making it about you.

Not judging.

Realising we all listen based on our own experiences, environment, upbringing, morals etc, do to be mindful, we are not biasing our reactions.
