My Anti Anxiety Medication Isn't Working. What do I do?

"While antianxiety medications such as Valium, Librium, or Xanax can be invaluable in helping people cope with stress and anxiety, they aren’t necessarily cure-alls and, in many cases, may not provide the kind of relief you might need. This is why you should learn as much as you can about what meds can and can’t do.

When You Are Starting on Meds For The First Time

If you have never been on antianxiety medications before, it’s essential to recognize that how your body responds to medication can change over time. Your biochemistry slowly adapts as medication levels build up to an optimum level in the bloodstream. For this reason, you shouldn’t panic if you aren’t getting immediate relief since it often takes a little while for the meds to have a good effect.

Should I Consider Psychotherapy?

Just remember that antianxiety medication is NOT a stand-alone solution. The main purpose of these meds is to control symptoms enough to function more effectively in your daily life. For example, if your anxiety comes from external problems like job loss, a relationship break-up, or social medication alone will take the edge off your symptoms. Still, it won’t make these problems go away. Essentially, medication is just there to provide you with a bit of “breathing space” so you can find your own solutions."

Take home message: Anti-anxiety medications can be wonderful in helping to relieve some of the symptoms of anxiety. I am someone who has taken them for years now and they help me function so much better! There is absolutely no shame if you take medication. With that in mind, medication shouldn't be used by itself. Medication allows you to have the ability to live at a functioning level so that you can work on your anxiety in other ways. Some of these things can include therapy, exercising, journaling, and so many other coping strategies! As always, you don't have to do this alone and there is always someone there when you need them! ❤️*

Great article!

This year has been very stressful for me. I had to go to the doctor because my anxiety was making my heart beat extremely fast and it was difficult for me to eat properly because I felt under constant pressure. I tried some psychological techniques that did help in a way but these physical symptoms continued. The doctor prescribed me anxiolytic medicine and it really helped me to function better. However, I took them only a few times when I felt extremely bad.

I’ve used breath to good success especially the out breath. Staring at trees or other peaceful things helped. Totally changing activity was ok too in order to reprogram my thoughts. I am on many meds but no benzodiazepines. Use others off label only as needed

@globalBraid3744 Yeah I definitely understand that. I have some anxiolytics, but I haven't taken them yet. I probably should have a few times, but they scare me a little bit. Thank you for sharing your experience!

@fruityPond7887

I get what you mean! I think with any medicine, a person needs to be cautious and not only take it as a fast fix without actually working on the problem itself. I would also not recommend anyone to start with anxiolytics, but rather take it when there is no other choice after trying a therapy.

@globalBraid3744 Right exactly! I definitely don't think they should be a first-choice option and should be used in conjunction with other treatment options! ❤️
