>> How Past Experiences Inform Who You Are <<

I found this amazing article in 7Cups Advice today while I was reading some helpful articles by our experts. This article was written by Leslie Carr, PsyD.

It is a piece I think will always resonate with everyone. This article is a good reminder that no matter what our past was, it is part of us. And, YES, it is a cliche for a reason. Every experience has an impact on how we getting shaped for the present or future.

That's on us how we view our past experiences but I think this article could change your perspective on how you see your past and yourself.

Its a worthwhile read.

So, how do you see your past experiences?

Share what do you think.

Before I met my guardian angel I viewed it as a curse as something shameful. I felt like my past was a disgusting part of me that no one would ever accept let alone want to do anything with it or me. I felt like an ugly distasteful broken thing. Far from human.

Then i met M and he showed me how strong I was he taught me to see the survivor not the victims. He said I was like the Phoenix, from the ashes something new something beautiful and strong and compassionate revives. He helped me see that as unpleasant as my past was it shaped me into a compassionate person ( that part of me I thought I had lost to all the self loathing and rage inside) I've learned to laugh at all the small things and I've definitely learned to follow my intuition above all. So now I can say I view my past as an obstacle on my journey into becoming a stronger wiser and much more understanding human being

@ASilentObserver

that when I FINALLY decided to forgive the abuser it was never for him but for me. Once I forgave it was like an enormous 20 million tons was lifted off of me even after so many yrs. I learned that holding grudges only harms you not he person you're holding grudges against. And that come what may come I am stronger than I give myself credit for. But with patience faith and compassion I will surpass any obstacles

My lack of previous experiences has left me with a MASSIVE VOID that mekes me even more insecure since at my age, whoever dates me expects that i have some elemental experience which i don't have.

@JohnDoe00 yeah, i get that John. I guess probably other one needs to understand without opportunities to try and learn, one cannot be experienced. i hope you get fair share of opportunities to learn and grow.

When I think of my past, I mostly think of my 30 years of being married. Those were wonderful years. I find myself avoiding thinking about what has happened since then. Yes, it all happened, but the vast majority of it was depressing and unfortunate. The good side is that I met someone and have had a successful relatonship. Many things learned, many things remembered.

How do you see your past experiences? Some good, some bad. 30 years of marriage, very good. My wife passing away, very bad. Relationships from then until a year ago, all bad. But a year ago someone found me, and we have been together ever since. This year has been a real trial, very difficult, but we have persevered and made it through the hard times.

My past relationship has opened my eyes so much I dont think if I wouldve ever known the love Ive found today! My past relationship was thru my adolescent to adult years. Most girls at that age should be in college experiencing life and finding her self as a woman! I was doing the opposite barely in school and molding myself for a man I thought would be my happy ending and forever! God sure had other plans for me. Long story short not everyone needs to go thru heartache to feel love but I did and i know exactly what not to put up with from any man! Ever again!

@ASilentObserver

How past experiences have shaped me in a good way:

I try to express my appreciation when someone does things for me or spends time with me. My ex felt I didn't appreciate him enough, so I'm trying to change by saying how much something means to me, even if it's something mundane. I think in the past, I didn't feel that I needed someone to say this to me and assumed others felt the same.

I try to express how I felt, express my concerns, or ask questions rather than make assumptions or withdraw from being hurt. I try to recognize things in my past that led to my hurt reaction, and try not to take things personally.

I don't work so hard to spend time with people who don't make time for me. In the past, I took on a lot of work trying to make things happen with people who were always too busy for me. I decided I'd rather spend time with people who reach out to me sometimes, or at least thank me for an invite and say they want to be with me.
