(Jan 2023) Listener Research Opportunity: Technology for Communication
Georgia Institute of Technology is conducting a research study to understand how people use and perceive different types of communication with the help of technology when providing support to others. First, you will be asked some general questions about your experience with conversations on 7 Cups. Then, we will ask you to help us design a tool by answering a few questions on a worksheet that will be given to you. Lastly, we will ask a few questions about your tool and how it can help with peer-to-peer counseling.
To participate in this interview, you must:
Be a current listener on 7 Cups who has had a conversation with a member in the past week
Be 18 years old or older
Be located in the U.S.
Listeners of all experience levels who meet the above criteria, including Mentors, Mentor Leaders, or Ambassadors are encouraged to apply if interested.
The study will take approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour to complete and you will be compensated with a $20 Amazon gift card for your participation.
Note that while the researchers will reach out to accepted listeners via email and have a 1:1 with them for the interview, all personal information will be private and kept separate from 7 Cups. This data will be kept confidential and not used for any other purpose by the researchers as well.
If you are interested in participating in this research, please fill out this interest form. We will reach out to you if you are a fit for the study.
@SoulfullyAButterfly Thankyou for letting us know! 🦋
@SoulfullyAButterfly
I'd love to participate. I did once! I've lived in the US 30 years but not any longer. It is disappointing that I receive such messages and cannot apply. I wish those notifications were not visible to me.
@Fradiga I wish there was a way to be an expat with no money in the bank lol
I wold love to participate.
I just went to Georgia Tech's website and saw nothing about a project like this. With all the scams out there, how do we know that this is for real? Please give us some way to independently verify the legitimacy of this project before we discuss any personal information. Thanks.
@JustSophia You make a good point but this thread is posted by @SoulfullyAButterfly who is one of the Community Admins here at 7 Cups so I am sure they have looked into this thoroughly.
Listening - One Step At A Time!
@JustSophia
It is not a scam and actually very interesting to do, since I ONCE passed through the netting and contributed to the research. I am pretty sure there are so many research topics that they cannot be all listed on those universities' websites.
@Fradiga was it a very engaging study?
@greatfulArtlover7425
Well, what they were interested in was suicide ideation or how to detect that someone chatting with you is considering it. There were two or three mock chats and then a verbal questionnaire on how A.I. could detect that someone could be suicidal.
That was the topic. There could be many others.
@JustSophia thank you for raising your concern. As @MistyMagic points out, we work closely with research partners to support their work. In addition, once you get selected via this short 7 Cups screener, you will be linked to an official form at a Georgia Tech's link with further details and how to participate.
I find it very frustrating that this post is sent to everyone around the globe but ONLY US residents are invited. This website deals with all kinds of emotional support, yet it can't find a way to make an announcement that will separate (segregate) those who are not called. How's that for an insult?
I hope this is the last one I see. Thank you for your consideration.
@SoulfullyAButterfly That seems interesting ❤️
I think I may have done something wrong when I got selected to take the servery. I answered the questionnaire and then it was over. It didn't take 45 mins or longer. Maybe I wasn't the right fit or something after the questionnaire.
@janewayalpha1
That's just the interest form!
@Emily619
Okay. Thank you for clarifying that. I had assumed that this thread had the link to the interest form.
So, I guess it's safe to presume that they will contact you when they are ready for you to take the servery.
I filled it out :) One critique, though, is the bottom question. Many listeners who've been around longer than a month aren't necessarily mentors or above. For example, I used to be a mentor leader but have since stepped down and am now just a regular listener. I just put mentor since I'm not new, but I'm technically not a mentor anymore either
