Why You Should Always Read a Listener's Bio Before Chatting

When you're hurting and looking for support it can be tempting to just click on the first available listener and dive right in. Sometimes the need to talk is urgent, and the idea of pausing to do research feels like one more thing standing between you and relief.

But taking sixty seconds to read a listener's bio can make a meaningful difference in the quality of support you receive. Here's why.

You'll find someone who actually gets it.

Listener bios often share the areas someone specializes in or has personal experience with. Things like anxiety, grief, relationship stress, LGBTQ+ issues, chronic illness, academic pressure, you name it. If you've been through something specific, finding a listener who has walked a similar path (or trained in that area) means you're less likely to spend the whole conversation just explaining the basics of your situation. You can get to the heart of what you're feeling faster.

You set yourself up for a better match.

Not every listener is right for every person, and that's okay. Some listeners are conversational and warm; others are more structured and goal-oriented. Some prefer to check in lightly; others are more direct. Bios give you a window into someone's communication style and personality. A good match isn't just about availability, but about fit.

You protect your own energy.

Starting a vulnerable conversation with someone who isn't equipped for what you're going through can leave you feeling more drained than when you started. Reading a bio first is a small act of self-advocacy.

You honor the listener's honesty.

Listeners write their bios to be transparent about who they are, what they're comfortable with, and any limitations they want you to know about. Reading it respects that openness. It's a two-way street, they've taken the time to show up honestly for you, even before the conversation begins.

A few things worth looking for:

  • Areas of focus or lived experience.
  • Any topics they note they're not the best fit for.
  • Languages spoken, if that's relevant to you.
  • How they describe their listening style.
  • Response time or availability notes.

You deserve support that actually reaches you. A listener's bio is the first place that support can begin even before you type a single word.

Take the extra moment. You're worth it.

@Jenna

such a good point on the importance of checking bios to narrow it down to people who get it. it does cut out all the need to explain, and it really saves time and energy on both sides. great post, Jenna!

That's a great question.

If you're using the browser/mobile browser and view listeners through the browse listeners page, you can click their photo or username, and it takes you to their public profile.

For the app, you can go to the bottom, where the chat bubbles icons are, and then select Find listener. When you're browsing through listeners, you can click their profile photo/username, and it will take you to their profile.
