Active Listening Skills 

It is the process of making a real attempt to listen, acknowledge and understand what other person has to say. It is an attempt to put oneself in another person's situation and understand how he could be feeling. More than anything, just listening to the person. Here listening not only means the words a person is saying but also listening to how the person is feeling, their experiences, thoughts and acknowledging and validating it. 

They are the foundation to provide essential support to bring the behavioral change in the person and de-escalate the situation turning into a potential conflict. 

  • Ask open-ended questions
  • Explicit supportive and compassionate phrases
  • Effective pauses
  • Reflecting or mirroring
  • Paraphrasing of contents
  • Paraphrasing of emotions
  • Being non-judgemental and listen with an open mind

Barriers to Active Listening
  • Advice, judgment, problem solving or persuasion
  • Pushing a conversation into an argument or conflict
  • Comapring the thoughts and responses
  • Interrupting the person
  • Engaging into an argument
  • Being sarcastic and dismiss their feelings and experiences
