It sounds like he might be very confused with your relationship and how he feels (can't express his emotions thoroughly). If he's working on himself, it most likely means he's trying to better himself to improve the relationship between you two. He can have a difficult time expressing his emotions, for example he can become jealous once you split but when you're together he can't express that same sense of care.
