I have been through a lot in life too, which helps me to be able to empathize with situations, thoughts and feelings that we have. Sometimes, it's not easy just being human.

Psychiatry is a medical field, that studies/"treats" illnesses. The psychiatrist is a doctor, and therefore can prescribe drugs, like any doctor.
Psychology is not a medical field, psychologist can't prescribe drugs.
Psychology is advised if you have things to talk about, if you need someone to talk to and help get through difficult times (like your loved one just died and you have issues dealing with it), or to help with psychic troubles by seeking out symptoms etc. Like if you've got phobias, trauma, need therapy to help live with anxiety, get through a depression etc.
The psychiatrist, in my experience, is less a "listener", and more a prescriber :/ It depends, of course, and some psychiatrist also do therapy and psychology... But for instance, if you have depression, you'll have to see a psychiatrist to get some antidepressant (if you need and want them), and they will see with you if you need more or less, how you're reacting to the drug and adapting the prescription etc..And at the same time, you can see a psychologist to help get through your depression, find how to get back on your feet.
Others will surely be able to add some details and all, but I guess that's roughly the difference between the two.
