Because your family may have expectations from you but you feel more at ease with your friends. Friends are usually at a similar age so may be more understanding as they may be experiencing similar feelings. Sometimes it can be easier to speak to friends as they’re is a different level of trust, where as sometimes it may feel like family members are a lot more judgmental. I personally find it easier to open up to friends as they are a lot more understanding and have been through similar experiences. Plus some families are really close and it can be a wiser to be yourself around friends without the fear of judgement.
