I suggest you try to ask him. Since both of you are that close, it should be okay to ask him. Maybe he might not open up, that's okay. Reassure him that it's okay if he can't talk about it. Try to make him feel comfortable, be open-minded and non-judgemental to his issue(s) he might be dealing with. Listen to what he has to say and do your best in supporting him. Good luck :)
