I don’t know about preventing getting angry, but I often have such outbursts. What helps me calm down are these things:
1. Try to feel the anger as soon as it comes (to me it feels like something is flowing through my hand)
2. When that “flow†fades away I usually take a pencil and a piece of paper, or even open Paint / drawing app and then...
3. Draw whatever’s bothering me the way I imagined it when my anger peaked (like a smashed vase lol) or just write it down along with some “tips†on how to fix it. And...
4. If you actually do that you’ll realise how funny the drawings/sentences are later and hopefully that will cheer you up!
Works for me every time. And I know it’s sometimes very tempting to do something bad to yourself... Just remember the paper and pencil thing or anything else you like doing (that’s not harmful) and try to replace the bad habit with it.
I know you can do it! And this site has great listeners to support you as well if you need them on your way!
Hope this helps!
When anger becomes overwhelming and leads to self-harm, it is an indication that you need to find an outlet for that anger that is more positive and less harmful! It may be helpful to redirect your thoughts or put your energy into some other activity. Listening to music, journaling, reading, or any other activity you like can help calm you down. Once you are calm, it is much easier to avoid self-harming behaviors because that tension and anger has already been released in a different way! Focusing on turning our negative energy into positive energy can also help you be happier and more positive in general! Remember, when your anger feels overwhelming, take a breath, and engage in a calming activity.
