When this used to happen with my roommate, I did three different things.
1. Studied in the lit dorm hallway.
2. Studied at a nearby library, friend's room, or restaurant.
3. Used a flashlight. They make awesome little ones that clip onto your shirt or hat.

Perhaps you could talk to him and explain how you really need to study, although he may deny this still.
If he doesn't accept your explanation, try to find other places (like a communal lounge, or a library) to study that will ideally promote thinking and memorising.
