I have seen more men then women get into drugs/alcohol. Why is this?

Men seem to get into drugs and alcohol because they have different gender roles that often ask that they remain strong and bottle up their personal feelings and vulnerabilities. For this reason, men do not confront their problems had on and turn to using substances to ignore their issues. Men are less likely to talk openly about what is troubling them and psychological studies have compared women and men against substance abuse and controlled for various variables and noted that gender roles play a large part in why men are expected to remain less fragile than women. Moreover, women will talk, confront, and seek help for their problems more so than men while men will turn to substance use like drugs and alcohol to sort/ignore their problems.

Social norms has an impact. The society expects male to be strong mind and strong will. While growing up, majority of male must have heard these phrase "boys do not cry", "boys should not be weak" or phrases along those lines. These phrases are ingrained into their young minds, turning those phrases into qualities of what being a male should be. The qualities would often prevent men from expressing extreme emotions or stresses, for they make men feel weak. Thus, men often turn to drugs and/or alcohol to relieve their stresses and make them feel better because they aren't able to reach out for support (one of many things to have a healthy life). They may have to much pride or afraid to feel weak to reach out for the help they need.
