Charles Shinaver, PhD

Psychologist

About

First we start by making a connection. I am very empathic and supportive. As we connect I will learn from you what you want to focus on. I operate from a cognitive behavioral point of view in which we will focus upon the links between your feelings, your thoughts and your behavior. Real change includes both insight about your thoughts, feelings and behavior, but it also requires a distinct focus upon changing your behavior.  We will work in a dynamic way moving back and forth on these issues as needed. Sticking points can be in any one of the three areas, but often people are not aware of the feelings that result in behavior that doesn’t work out well. Identifying the feeling is often a critical component. Many times that is related to thoughts like negative expectations or self-talk. Some thinking patterns and self talk may need to be challenged. I do that in an empathic and direct way. My goal is for you to make progress. This sometimes means empathizing, other times it involves reflecting on thinking patterns and it may require different behavioral strategies. We do what it takes to get it done! I am excited to work with you on this revolutionary platform!

I think one of the things that sets a really good listener apart is the ability to ask penetrating questions at the right times. Dr. Shinaver has clearly mastered that skill. I haven't been working with him long, but I feel like the questions he's asked have really helped me reflect on things in a more productive way, which is, I think, a big part of what therapy should do.
This was my first session on 7cups and also with Dr. Charles Shinaver. It was very helpful and our first conversation went very well! He asked me helpful questions and gave me some advice and suggestions to think about.
