Hello! Welcome to my profile! I'm looking forward to meeting you and before we connect I'd like to tell you about myself as a Therapist, my educational and professional background, and a little about how I do life. I hope this will answer some of your initial questions and help you know if I'm a good match for you.
Before all of that though I wanted to write this to YOU: I don't know you yet. I don't know your story and how things are in your life right now but I do know this: I want to know you. I've wanted to "know" and really connect with people ever since I can remember. In Kindergarten my teacher said that I spent too much time wondering about if my classmates were doing ok... and she was right. It was a hearts desire then and it has grown over the past 37 years of my life to underlie everything I do as a professional counselor.
So, if you take anything from my profile, if you skip over all the education and credentials and expertise, take this: At the end of the day I believe that GOOD counseling is simply one human talking to another human, really getting to know who they are, and journeying on their road with them a while. The "clinical" part of this relationship gets woven inbetween. I hope I'll get a chance to connect with you and show you what that can be like!
Having said that, I care a lot about doing counseling with excellence. So I've put in my time academically and in ongoing professional development so I can say with confidence that I am really good at certain things. So here are some of my stats:
I hold a Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychology since 2006, from Trinity International University in Deerfield Illinois. I have worked as a counselor for the past 11 years and am a Lisenced Clinical Professional Counselor in the States of Washington, Alaska, Idaho, and Hawaii. I am also a Designated Mental Health Examiner for the State of Idaho. I am at the core a Cognitive Behavioral Therapist and structure my counseling accordingly but I love using componants of art, narrative, existential, and music therapy - basically anything that helps you get access to your mind and soul - and solve problems in new and dynamic ways.
I am certified to assess and treat chemical dependency, early childhood trauma, and developmental disabilities like ADHD, FASD, and Autism.
Relationship issues like divorce, communication problems, violence, and difficulty maintaining meaningful relationships.
Depression: short term and long term depression, grief, loss, and lingering sadness.
Anxiety: panic attacks, constant worry and feeling "stressed out."
Substance Abuse: all drugs and alcohol
Sexual Abuse Recovery
Parenting: children and teenagers
Trauma and PTSD
I am fluent in German and can provide counseling in German upon request.
In the past, I have worked in Private Practice with Adults, Teens, and Children, with the Department of Corrections and in Homeless Shelters, in Residential Treatment settings, and I own a Business in the State of Idaho that provides Mental Health Examinations for Kootenai County Hospital. I have provided psychological expert witness services during court hearings, supervised new clinicians, and am currently working as a Behavioral Health Clinician in a small community health clinic on a remote island in Alaska.
I was born in Germany and raised in Africa and in the USA. I think my family's frequent moving instilled in me a sense of adventure and wonder about the world. I love traveling, reading (the last book I read was Erick Larson's book "In the Garden of Beasts"), animals - particularily my Great Dane George and my Wiener dog Emily, and nature photography. I also enjoy hiking and scuba diving, and as you might be able to tell from my lengthy profile, I also like writing and exploring literature. I'm married ten years to a great guy who shares my sense of adventure and lives this in his profession as a bush pilot. We have no children though I think our dogs would both disagree. If I could start my life all over again I don't think I would wish for any of it to be different - even the hard parts - the ones that lead me to be the counselor I am today.
Thanks for your interest in my profile! I hope I will soon get the chance to know you and your story and that we will spend some really good times journeying together.
