This is very common dx in the United States.   Bipolar can only be treated, not cured.   A medical dx is needed for this condition.  This is a lifelong disorder.   The causes of bipolar is unknown at this time.  Some think that this is caused by a combination of genetics, the environment, and altered brain structure and altered body chemistry.   Some cases may involve being in the hospital.   There are 3 types of specialist that are needed to treat this disorder:  psychiatrist, clinical psychologist, and a primary card doctor.   The 3 common types of meds are: anticonvulsants, antipsychotics, and SSRI’s.

As mentioned earlier, therapy plays an important role in the the treatment of bipolar. These therapies include: support groups, CBT, psychoeducation, family therapy and psychotherapy. Support groups lead by a counselor, either in office or online counseling, when the patient is stable enough to participate is very helpful. A therapist, in person or online therapy can help with conflicts and some communication issues.  Active listening can help the trained listener with clues as to what is going on with the patient.
