Hi, I'm really glad you decided to reach out to me here! I will work really hard to ensure that I am open, honest, helpful, and compassionate. I am physically disabled and I have struggled for the past five years to come to terms with my disability. In particular I have Ehlers Danlos Syndrome - a connective tissue disorder that prevents my collagen from forming correctly. It causes a lot of various symptoms but mainly dislocations - all of my joints are loose and I have trouble getting around without braces. I know that as a disabled person, sometimes it's important to talk with someone who has a sense of what it is to be limited. I enjoy reading, writing, painting, knitting, and cross stitching. I look forward to getting to know you, and I hope I can make you feel cared for. Thank you for having the courage to reach out to others, I hope you find solace here. At the moment I am a fourth year PhD Candidate so I unfortunately do not have a lot of time to spend as a listener. Therefore, I do not take regular members but rather hold chats that will last one session. I'm sorry for this inconvenience. I'm happy to communicate with an individual more than once, but cannot build a concrete schedule for appointments on a weekly basis.

Battling Stigmas

...See more Hi everyone, Listeners have recently been given a new project topic revolving around stigmas. At this time I'm unfortunately unable to commit to any of the teams here because I'm terribly busy in school, but I have been thinking of some interesting project ideas that perhaps others would like to join me on. I think one of the main ways we can battle stigmas around disabilities is visibility. People with invisible illnesses are criticized because they look well when they are really dealing with so much. On the other hand those of us who use assistive devices, take medications, or physically look different are stigmatized in other ways. As a historian looking at disability history, I've been really interested in the visualization of disability through time. I think it's fascinating that there have always been cultural assumptions surrounding the topic. I was hoping that some people could get together to create an art project. I really like the idea of presenting something like "Our Hidden Lives: Disability Behind the Scenes". I think photography and photo editing combined with quotations or personal anecdotes could create a really powerful set of images. I would love to talk to others about the possibility of battling stigmas through an art project such as this. You could take photos of the world through your eyes (just make sure things remain anonymous - no selfies please!) to show that we all see the world in a very similar light. Even though we deal with disabilities we have families, jobs, dreams, goals, and full lives.

The heart that opened for me, embracing me, warming me. The hands that wiped my tears, and drew a smile on my face. The person that reminded me, that the sun is still there, and it will shine the next day, no matter how dark is the night.
