Hello! I'm glad that you've come to 7cups, and happy that you have found me! I'm a trained active listener! I really like taking time to help people and absolutely love listening and sharing my experiences. I have experience with eating disorders (mostly bullimia), autism spectrum disorders including asperger's, depression, addiction(substance/drug/alcohol), sexuality, and self harm.

I enjoy reading, spending time with my family and my puppies (if you couldn't tell from my profile picture) , and spending atrocious amounts of time on tumblr. I also spend a lot of time studying because I'm working on my degree in both Psychology and Political Science. I've overcome a lot in life and would like to help by listening to you. If I'm online, then please feel free to start a chat. If I'm offline, then send me a message and we can set up a time to connect. Glad you are here!

Making Universities More Supportive

...See more Hey guys! I'm Dresden, and I'm a second year psychology student from Canada! While applying for scholarships, I notices a grant fund that my University has for raising awareness and creating programming to benefit people with mental illnesses. I would really love to take part in this/apply for this grant, but I am unsure of what I would use it for!  There is a theme for the award, and this year it's "building more welcoming and supportive communities". This is something that I really think is important and really want to help with. I could host an event, fundraiser, or program using my grant money. So, basically, my question for you is what do you think would help to make a University campus more supportive to people with mental illnesses?
Seeking Help

...See more Recently I was thinking about my own addiction, and how hard it was for me to get the help that I needed. I remember how intimidating the whole idea of seeking help felt to me  when I first realized that I had a problem. This train of thought made me realized that I probably wasn't the only person who felt intimidated by recovery! I thought that maybe by posting a couple of links on this forum, it might make it easier for people to find the help they need or at least start on their own path to recovery. Seeing as most of my experience is centred around narcotics abuse a lot of these links will be focused on that, but I’m sure that they would be helpful with any kind of addiction. This is the website for Narcotics Annoymous (NA): http://www.na.org/ If you want to find a meeting you can do that here: http://www.na.org/meetingsearch/ This is a link to a brochure on what to expect from an NA meeting: http://www.na.org/admin/include/spaw2/uploads/files/EN3129.pdf This links to a website with some interesting advice on seeking help: http://mental-health-matters.com/psychological-disorders/substance-abuse-disorders/ This website contains information on treatment options including rehab: http://www.recoveryconnection.org/ This is a link to a page with some addiction specific chatrooms http://www.addictionrecoveryguide.org/resources/online_communications/chat_rooms You can also seek help on this website! Here’s a link to all listeners who are willing to talk/have some experience with addiction: https://www.7cups.com/BrowseListeners/?agegroup=&expertise=&country=&language=&keyword=addiction&sortby=availability
What's Your Story?

...See more I thought it would be kind of cool to make an AA/NA style forum thread, so I'll start. Hi, my name's Dresden and I'm an addict. I'm a month sober of all substances including alcohol and prescription drugs. I suffer from clinical depression, and after trying multiple anti-depressants I gave up on them ever working. Instead, I started self medicating. It started with a shot of a little something extra in the morning, or a couple tablets of codeine and escalated from there. Substances made me feel numb and pain-free and that is all I had ever wanted.  About a month ago, I ended up in the hospital. A friend of mine came over and we were going to go to a bonfire later that day. I had already started drinking that day and had some narcotics in my system from the night before but decided to smoke some weed. As soon as I took the first hit, I knew something was wrong. My head was spinning and I felt like everything was in slow motion. I could hear the blood pumping in my head, and felt like I was going to faint so I retreated to my bedroom where I lied down to try and calm down.I started to feel my limbs move without me moving them, so I called a friend who took me to the hospital.  My heart rate was 192, and low oxygen in my blood. Later, I found out that I had been having minor seizures and and that if I had not gone into the hospital it could have gotten out of hand, and may have resulted in a stroke or brain damage. While I was in the emergency room, I could hear a couple of my friends in the waiting room crying because they were afraid of what would happen, and I realized how afraid I was. That night was the scariest thing that has ever happened to me, and was the last time that I took any substances to make myself feel less alone. It helped me to realize that I have people in my life who care about me, and who want to make sure that I stay safe.   Anyone else?
