...See more Once upon a time, in a quaint little village next to a mountain, there was an Avocado tree. The Avocado tree was very happy to be in that position. The mountain air, the clean and tasty water, the cows in the background, all made for a very peaceful setting. The tree had lived through a nice pleasant summer and was waiting for autumn so it could start fruiting. One day a baby avocado started growing, tiny but cute. The tree was very happy. It proudly showed off the tiny avocado to anyone passing by. A group of hikers were passing by and saw the tiny avocado. They camped underneath the tree, had their lunch sandwiches and orange juice, rested a while and looked up at the avocado. One of the hikers was from south America and was visiting the mountains of eastern Europe. He looked at the baby avocado and said 'that's a lucuma'. The others said 'no that's an avocado'. He said surely that cant be, and showed them pictures of the lucuma fruit. Now the tiny avocado was listening to all this, and although it didn't have google skills, it started thinking 'Who or what am I?' Why am I here? Is there someone else in the world like me? The avocado had been very happy until then with its position on the tree in that tiny village, next to the mountain and the stream. It had thought 'I have crisp air, clean water, cows and animals for company, greenery all around and many hikers to observe as they passed by. What more could I possibly need in life?' But that one discussion changed everything. Suddenly baby avocado had heard there was more in this world, a lucuma fruit that looked just like itself. It was intrigued. Baby avocado decided that it now needs to grow up fast and go to meet this new fruit who apparently was just like itself. The anticipation made it glow with excitement. Suddenly baby avocado had a purpose in life. It started making plans. It started observing hikers who were from that region, so it could travel with them. Baby avocado's brothers and sisters were all content dangling and swinging from branches and never wanted to leave. Baby avocado wanted more from life. It wanted to know the unknown, it wanted to connect with other fruits in the world, it wanted to experience the world on its own. One day, baby avocado became a teenager. It was still not ripe, but it had grown enough to be able to leave the tree and ripen on its own if needed. It decided that this was the time, it could not wait any longer, else it would ripen on the tree itself. Teen avocado had learnt the art of swinging widely from the branch, just enough to still remain connected. It was really upset at the thought of leaving mommy tree, it loved the tree. But if it stayed and ripened, then it would never be able to explore the world or even explore its own potential. Love doesn't mean one always stays in the same place. It can also mean being the best version of oneself, and telling the mommy tree 'Look what I eventually became' Teen avocado knew that mommy tree would be proud of it one day. It wanted to make mommy tree proud. One day, it heard a hiker speak Spanish, and thought 'he must be from south America'. The hiker leant against the tree and opened a backpack to take a water bottle out. Teen avocado knew this was a good chance. So it started swinging widely. When the hiker opened the backpack again to keep the bottle, Teen avocado finally gave one last swing and broke free. It landed in the backpack. It was dark inside the backpack once the hiker closed it. Avocado could feel constant swinging going on, but it wasn't falling anywhere. This was a new sensation. It was dark but the night never finished and there was no sunrise. It was swinging but there was no wind. It could hear people all the time, but not see them. It could touch a water bottle and a cloth around it, but not see them. Teen avocado wondered what sort of world this was. Teen avocado was initially very happy and very curious about this new world. Eventually it went on and on, and there was no light at the end of the tunnel. It could not understand any more what was happening. It also missed mommy tree and its brothers and sisters. There was no one to talk to, to share what was happening, to be able to ask questions, no mommy tree to hold it gently and say 'Everything will be okay, teen avocado'. The only thing teen avocado held on to was that it still wanted to somehow be able to travel to south America and meet the lucuma fruit. It wanted to make mommy tree proud. It wanted to experience life before life was taken away. So it held on through the dark times and kept dreaming. It told itself, 'one day things will be okay' There were some times when the backpack opened slightly, and teen avocado was able to breathe freely. Then the backpack stopped and it could hear snoring at night. The next day the swinging started again. So this went on for 3 days. One day, the backpack was kept on a moving road. The road moved and beeped and someone else took the backpack. It could hear 'Is this bag to be checked in?' and some people talking to each other. Eventually it was moving but not swinging and heard a steady hum of engines for many hours. When teen avocado could next see light, there were mountains nearby once again. There mountains were really huge compared to the mountains back home and covered in a white powder called 'snow'. The trees here were different but very beautiful. There were lakes and rivers twice the size of those back home. The wind was so intense that it almost felt its skin would come off. Someone had seen teen avocado and decided to take it out of the backpack. It was now on an outdoor table and waiting to ripen. It could see a little girl come towards it and say 'Oh a lucuma'. It wanted to tell her its not a lucuma, but it could not speak the language. It wanted to ask her a thousand questions about where it was, but the language barrier continued. So it lay there observing this new world. Then something extraordinary happened with teen avocado. A young teenage boy walked towards it with another avocado in hand. This avocado had a very special glow, and was the most beautiful avocado that it had ever seen in life. It almost felt like sunshine coming out of the avocado in a dark world. The teen avocado could not stop staring. The young boy took the other avocado straight to the same table and said 'let them ripen together, then we will make ice cream'. And thus, teen avocado met the first lucuma in his life, without even knowing that it had met her. Teen avocado was now becoming a young fruit. It was no longer a teenager. When it saw lucuma for the first time, its seed jumped from within. It felt sensations it never knew it could ever feel. It wanted to keep staring at lucuma, but not make her uncomfortable. It wanted to speak to her, but no words were possible. It felt excited, scared, happy, elated, and curious all at the same time. Lucuma was confused how she had fallen off the tree. She was now on a table with another lucuma she had never seen the likes of. This lucuma was paler, yellower, and stared at her. She approached slowly and said 'Ola'. Avocado replied 'Hello'. Avocado in the meantime, was observing her. He understood that ola somehow meant hello. He also noticed that her part of the table was in the sun, while his was in the shade. So he rolled over to protect her from the sun. She said gracias, and without even knowing the language, he somehow knew she was thanking him. He smiled. She smiled back at him. They did not need a common language to communicate. They were both at the age where they weren't teens, but they weren't ripe either. So they were sharing a table and life put them there together to ripen - him having travelled all the way across from Europe, and her having fallen off a tree without knowing why her fate had brought her here. For lucuma, this was not love at first sight. She initially looked at him and thought, 'what a strange yellow lucuma'. She also wondered if it was his fault she had fallen off the tree and that they had brought her here to keep him company. But his small acts of protecting her against the sun and understanding her even though they spoke different languages slowly made her more open to him. Everyday, when the sun set and the night became cold, Avocado would move closer to Lucuma to keep her warm. When a bird got closer and tried to attack Lucuma, Avocado got in the way and the bird could not attack because Avocado was larger. When it started raining, Lucuma found a small puddle and excitedly showed Avocado so they could drink together. Once it snowed and they huddled close to each other. That was the first time they hugged. Avocado felt the seed inside jumping. He felt that time should stop right there and the world should remain like this forever. Lucuma was slowly getting close to him without realising what she was feeling. Then one day, there was a Christmas party in the house. In the Christmas party, there were many friends from nearby, and some from other parts of the world. Avocado and Lucuma had grown to understand many words from each other, but it was nice for Avocado to hear sentences from his own language, from his own world. It felt strangely familiar. He tried to understand what they were saying. Lucuma said 'Be careful, you will fall off the table'. He smiled and said he would be careful. He leaned over and started listening. They talked about college, learning, travelling, girlfriends, cars, football matches. Then suddenly one of them saw Avocado leaning. The boy who saw Avocado immediately said 'Oh that's an avocado'. He told everyone and said he can make excellent guacamole with such a fine avocado. They took him off the table and started preparing the ingredients for guacamole. In the meantime, Lucuma realised what they were doing. She was completely distraught and didn't know what to do, or how to save him. She tried to tell them, they couldn't hear her. She tried to roll on the table, but no one saw her. She tried to ask other fruits to help, they did not want to risk being eaten. She was trying hard to find some way to save him. She could not live without him, and that was the first time she realised her feelings for Avocado. Avocado and Lucuma had befriended a small bunny and used to drop seeds and nuts to the bunny sometimes. When bunny arrived that day, it saw Lucuma in distress. She showed him what was happening with Avocado. Bunny understood immediately. It first asked Lucuma to jump off the table and hide in a corner. 'Be ready to roll', Bunny said. Lucuma jumped off, Bunny caught her and she hid. Then bunny decided to jump on a dinner table and chew on the turkey and trimmings. It thumped its tail and made noises so everyone understood it was there. People started running after Bunny to catch it, while Bunny randomly jumped and ate fruit and whatever it wanted to create more distractions. Avocado saw his chance. He rolled off and landed on a chair. Then it rolled off the chair and landed on the carpet. It rolled and rolled until it went to Lucuma. They both rolled into the grass outside and kept rolling and not looking back. When they finally stopped, Lucuma said to Avocado 'Don't ever do this to me again, do you realise how hard my seed was jumping!'. Avocado looked at her and there was a smile in his eyes, even though his lips were not smiling. Their eyes met. Their seeds were now both jumping together in rhythm. They rolled together in the garden and reached a sunny spot. There they laid in the mud and covered themselves in soil to hide. They were extremely happy in their tiny world, no one else and nothing else mattered. They were both now fully ripe. After a few days, there was a small sapling that started growing from where they had hidden. The sapling took one look at the mountains and the river and said 'This is such a nice world'  That is the end of Avocado and Lucuma's story  @Bing22, @convivialAvocado1138, @PepperoniPizza3000, @gum21my, @CommunityModAnne, @sereneMango2512, @chillibean, @sensitiveShade5337
