what's the point of prom if your going alone

...See more the title is self-explanatory, I have no date let alone friends outside or inside of school to attend with me. I feel no excitement or joy over going, I feel nothing at all besides anxiety and prepare to embarrass myself there tonight as I have to stay the entire 4 hours. I just don't know what to do with myself, I am worried i'll start crying actually out of shamefulness of being alone or watching others enjoy themselves. I don't think people will approach me either, I don't believe I catch any interest to even talk with. I am far too nervous to start conversations myself and I don't know how to engage with strangers. People told me they, "commend me" for going alone, which doesn't help me feel any better as I don't have an option not to anyway. I don't feel like I'm making a brave or bold statement I'm really embarrassed. So yeah this post is basically an anonymous confession/vent i'm a loser I guess.
