Although I’m normally a quiet individual, I’ve found I really open up when it’s for the sake of others. I don’t like to stand by while people I care about suffer, and it’s always rewarding and relieving when I know they’re smiling again. I want to help other people the same way I help my friends and family, so while I’m admittedly a little shy, I’m more than happy to listen to anyone who just needs to unwind.

...See more ASD is well known for 'causing' repetitive behaviors that don't seem to serve any purpose. Individuals are prone to gestures like hand-flapping or kicking their feet when they sit, for example, and many find comfort in keeping things organized in a very specific way. In fact, it might be impossible to function unless certain conditions are met. For example, when I was younger, I would throw a tantrum whenever my silverware at the table was laid out 'incorrectly'. It's not uncommon to feel self-conscious about these tendencies when they pop up in public, but there's absolutely nothing wrong with them. In fact, they can be essential to our everyday lives. Some of our actions are either done subconsciously or done to help us cope, and trying to refrain from them is both physically and mentally straining. The consequences of not fulfilling them can be lessened to an extent over time—depending on the action and the individual, of course—but they're almost always a part of us, and there's nothing wrong with that as long as nobody's harmed from it. Don't feel guilty for idly tapping your feet on the ground or sorting your books or games in a unique way. It's how you are, and nobody who cares about you is going to call you out on it.
