...See more Sometimes, the greatest mysteries aren’t found in storybooks or legends, but in the lives that pass by us every day, unknown and unexplored. Why are they unknown? Simply because no one asks, "Hey, how’s your life?" Instead, we only see their lives when it’s convenient for us or when we see them post about it. But is that real life? The life they show at convenient times, the life they post on social media for likes, or even the life they present to family and friends? No, it isn’t, and many people aren’t open to seeing more. They assume the version of the person they see in a given moment is the whole truth. Or perhaps you’re in an online game or chat room, and there’s a visible title. If you say something by accident on a bad day, people might decide that title is not just a label, but your entire identity. I know how this feels. Once, in an online chat group, an argument broke out between two people. The observers kept saying, “You know why they’re being rude? Because they’re a newbie. All people with the ‘newbie’ title treat others rudely.” Was that true? No. But did people believe it? Yes. What if the title is pointless and absurd? Do they still judge you by that label? Unfortunately, yes. Whether your title is “I’m broke” or “I’m wealthy,” once people see a label, they stop seeing the human being behind it. Why bother to get to know someone emotionally and personally when you can just rely on what you see and validate your assumptions? I don’t think that’s right. Many people claim, “I know that person.” But do you actually know them? Or did you just hear something, or see them once, and decide? If you ask, they might just repeat the first thing they heard or saw, and suddenly act as if they’re best friends. But if you asked the actual person, they might shake their head and say, “No, I never even knew about this person until now.” You listen and wonder why the first person pretended to know someone they don’t. They don’t know a single genuine thing about them, just what someone else has said. People believe that if they observe one action, they understand someone’s whole life, and that gives them permission to be presumptuous. Where did the effort to learn someone’s real story go? Did it disappear with new generations? Did we stop caring because we care only about ourselves? Or has society lost the ability to thrive with care, empathy, and respect for the other people who pass by us every day? From now on, I strive to ask questions, listen deeply, and treat each person as an individual with their own story. One thing I’ve learned in my life is to always treat people the way you want to be treated. Just because someone wears different clothes, looks different, or acts differently doesn’t give us the right to label them or spread things about them we don’t know are true. These realizations have changed me by teaching me the true importance of knowing a whole person and taking the time to care. Because, deep down, realizing we don’t really know who they are, just what we’ve seen or heard, is wrong. Next time, before you say something about someone, ask yourself: Do I really know this person? Did they tell me this face-to-face, or am I just labeling them based on assumptions?
