A Personal Reflection on Acting and Change (IDGs)

...See more When I think about the “Acting” skills in the Inner Development Goals—courage, creativity, optimism, and perseverance—I don’t think of big achievements. I think of school days when things didn’t go as planned. For me, courage looks like asking a question even when I’m afraid it sounds silly, or speaking up in a group discussion instead of staying quiet. It rarely feels confident—mostly, it feels uncomfortable. I’ve started noticing creativity in small adjustments. After doing badly on a test once, I changed how I studied instead of blaming myself. That shift—trying a different method instead of repeating the same mistake—felt like a form of creative action. What I struggle with most is perseverance. When effort doesn’t immediately show results, it’s tempting to give up. In those moments, optimism isn’t about pretending everything is fine; it’s about believing that continuing still has value, even when progress is slow. Reflecting on this made me realize that taking action isn’t about being fearless or perfect—it’s about choosing to continue, adjust, or try again despite uncertainty. I’m curious: when school gets overwhelming, which of these—courage, creativity, optimism, or perseverance—do you rely on the most? And which one do you find hardest to practice?

...See more For me, the “Being” dimension of the Inner Development Goals feels like the quiet foundation behind everything else we do. Before trying to lead, collaborate, or create change, how we relate to ourselves really matters—especially in stressful or uncertain moments. I notice this most through the idea of an inner compass. Small choices—like whether to speak up when something feels wrong or stay honest when it’s uncomfortable—often come down to values. It makes me wonder: how clear are our values, and do we actually pause to check in with them? Integrity and authenticity show up in everyday situations too, such as admitting confusion in class or not agreeing with others just to fit in. These moments require self-awareness, which I think is one of the hardest but most useful skills. When I recognize why I’m irritated or anxious, I’m less likely to react in ways I later regret. I’ve also noticed how openness and a learning mindset change conversations. Instead of defending an opinion immediately, choosing curiosity can lead to learning something new. And then there’s presence—being fully there while listening to a friend or focusing on one task without distractions. It’s simple, but not easy. Reading about “Being” made me reflect on which of these qualities I already practice and which I avoid when things get uncomfortable. It also made me think about small habits—like pausing before reacting or checking in with my emotions—that could strengthen my relationship with myself over time. I’m curious to know: which part of the “Being” dimension do you notice most in your own life, and which one do you think you need to work on the most?
