...See more Hi all, I don’t see too many super recent posts in the bipolar thread. I just joined as a listener today and was browsing through the threads. I noticed I’m the 10,000th member in this general group (bipolar/schizophrenia/psychosis support). As far as I have been diagnosed, I have Bipolar II, so does my mom. She was finally diagnosed when I was 15, although she’d probably been struggling since before I was born. Because of her hard work all those years in therapy, and getting a correct diagnosis, when my first hypomanic episode occurred at 21 I knew exactly what it was and got myself into a psychiatrist who diagnosed me in the first appointment. I was also lucky that my mom did all the legwork for years with medications and I brought her main medication to the psychiatrist after a first one he tried didn’t work. I went on that one back in 2019 and have been essentially stable since. I don’t currently do any psychotherapy for myself, but I am on the psychiatric medications I’ve been on since 2019. I finished my psych degree and have done some coursework in addictions and mental health, and have recently begun observations for a job working with youth who have autism. I just want to let anyone who may be in their first years/months of diagnosis or treatment know that you can reach stability. It is hard and it may take time and dedication to keeping yourself well, and there may be small struggles in between, but long-term stability is absolutely possible. if anyone wants to talk I have formal and independent education on bipolar disorder, as well as lived experience from my own point of view and the point of view as a child with a parent who has bipolar disorder. We could talk meds, therapy, general well-being, addiction, ptsd, memory loss, neurodivergence, anything in that pairs with bipolar. Bend my ear.
