Hi, I'm Audrey! Feel free to reach out if you want to chat. I am a psychology student with experience in anxiety, OCD, and depression, but there are many other topics I am happy to discuss with you and try to walk you through! I cannot give advice, as I am NOT a professional, but I want to be here to provide a listening ear for you throughout whatever you may be experiencing. As I am a student, I will now only be accepting new chats on the weekends when I am not in classes. However, I will continue responding to any ongoing weekend chats throughout the week and will do my best to get back to you within 24 hours! :)

ADHD in Women
Women's Issues / by audreymay24

...See more Hi, ladies! I wanted to take the time to write a little about a topic that's become very important to me. I've recently learned that a lot of women who actively display ADHD symptoms never receive a diagnosis due to diagnostic criteria mostly being based on how ADHD presents in men. Over the past year, I have been struggling with severe procrastination and lack of focus, but because I always complete tasks on time and keep an appearance of having everything together, I wasn't taken seriously when I tried to voice these concerns. When my therapist suggested that I may be experiencing ADHD, I took a deeper dive into the symptoms, and this is how I discovered that in some ways, ADHD presents differently in women than it does in men. However, historically, most of the diagnostic criteria has been based off of studies done with men, leaving gaps in the research for how women are impacted. I think there's a lot to be said about the fact that many women go undiagnosed and untreated because of the lack of conversation and research surrounding ADHD in women within mental health fields. That's why I think it's super important to educate yourself on mental illness and be in tune with your mental health so you can be your own advocate if no one else will be.  What are some common ADHD symptoms in women? While there are many other symptoms, here are a few common ones that often go unrecognized because they tend to appear in women:  Why are women often overlooked in ADHD diagnoses? -In childhood, girls are more likely to display inattentive ADHD, rather than the hyperactive type, which boys typically display. This means their symptoms are not usually 'disruptive' to the class and are therefore less likely to be taken notice of. -Due to overlapping symptom presentation with mood disorders and lack of knowledge about ADHD symptoms present in women, many women are often misdiagnosed with anxiety or depression. -Women are more likely to display masking behaviors to meet societal expectations, often resulting in perfectionism or high-functioning performance, which makes symptoms less noticeable to others.  -Fluctuations in hormones may change severity of symptoms at certain times, leading to confusion over the seriousness of the struggle.  Thoughts & Reflection I want to open up the conversation to you all and hear your thoughts on this issue! If you struggle with ADHD, what did/does your journey towards a diagnosis look like? Have you had to be your own advocate in any way? I would love to hear your stories below! Also, if you have any thoughts on this topic in general or on the impact of the gender difference, I would love to hear that as well! :)

Humility

...See more Humility is one of the most underrated character strengths, in my opinion. Often times, being humble can be misinterpreted as being a "pushover" or lacking confidence. However, I think those that possess a lot of humility actually have the most accurate assessment of their strengths and abilities. They know their strengths, but they don't feel the need to boast about them. They also are the first to admit when they are wrong or have made a mistake. Pride is a stumbling block for so many people, so I really admire those with humility because they possess a sort of quiet confidence that makes them more powerful than the loudest, most outwardly confident voices in the room. People with humility are often some of the kindest people you will meet as well. This is because they know how to set their selves aside and care for the needs of others. I think because gentleness is often a side effect of humility, people mistake the kindness of a humble person for weakness or even low self-esteem. However, I think people who possess true humility are not low in self worth; they just do not need the attention of others to feed it. While humility is not one of my top three traits, it is something I try to practice in my daily life. When was the last time you showed humility in a situation? Do you feel that it came from a place of weakness or strength? Reflect on how you felt in that moment.

Curiosity

...See more Growing up, I've often heard the phrase, "Curiosity killed the cat." It wasn't until years later that I learned the caveat to this statement, which is present in the second half of the phrase: "...but satisfaction brought it back." I think the fact that we rarely ever hear this whole phrase put together says a lot about how we view curiosity as a society. It's almost viewed as a negative thing to be avoided in fear of going "too far". However, curiosity is a character strength because without it, we would never go anywhere at all. Curiosity does not always lead to risky decision-making. Sometimes it's just that small push that encourages us to take a step we have been afraid of taking. It's that subtle shove that encourages you to apply for a job you don't feel qualified for just to see what happens. It's the small voice that tells you to pick up the hobby you've been wanting to try for years even if you don't think you will be good at it. Curiosity is about taking chances. Those who possess this strength may seem to succeed the most, but in reality, they have failed just as many times. They just continue to explore new options and foster new ideas, giving them a better chance at success. While some may naturally possess this strength more than others, I think curiosity is something we all possess to some degree. Think of one time that something unexpectedly worked out for you. How did curiosity lead you to initiate the first step?
