If I go out canoeing and I come across a giant rock in my path as I’m paddling down the river, I have some choices to make. I can say “great, this just ruins a perfectly good canoe trip”, stow my paddle, and crash into it. I can hope that the current is on my side and that it will carry me around the rock. Or I can acknowledge that the rock is there and adapt by portaging past it.
