Change Thoughts (Part IV)

Goal

To improve your thoughts and interpretations related to social situations.

New Truths (Barlow, p. 105)

Once the inaccurate thoughts or beliefs are challenged, new truths need to be identified. Ask yourself these questions to help come up with alternative thoughts and beliefs:

  • What else could you say instead of your initial thought(s)/belief(s)?
  • How else could you interpret the social situation?

By practicing the new and more realistic way of looking at life experiences, over time your feelings will positively respond to your new way of thinking. You’ll begin feeling less fearful and anxious about social situations. In the absence of those negative emotions, you will find it much easier to be in meaningful relationships with others.
