Ending a Difficult Friendship

...See more I have a friend that really is hard to deal with. He's rude, treats me like I'm stupid and inferior, and even sometimes hits me. We were really only acquaintances until we started going to college at the same place, and now he thinks were best friends. I really want to end the friendship because it's been taking a toll on me, but I can't because he is severly depressed and suicidal. Almost all of his other friends have left because of the same reasons I want to, which leaves me to deal with the emotional aftermath, and have no way out. I know that this isn't something that can be remedied easily, but any advice would be helpful right now. Thanks.
