Where Compassion and Distress Tolerance Overlap
IDG 7 Cups Hub / by LikeRingsInWater

...See more Reflecting on my (still very limited) chat experience and some conversations going on in the listener forums, I have been wondering about the interplay between the two fields of Emotional Regulation & Distress Tolerance (Being), and Empathy and Compassion (Relating). So given the assumption that we are all here on 7 Cups as listeners because we want to be there for someone in distress, as a mental support voice and a patiently listening ear. We learn and practice active listening skills, and try to make someone feel seen and heard. We try to support them by making them see a way forward for themselves, without us giving advice or opinion, thus making them feel in control of the situation. Now adding to the above mentioned Empathy and Compassion field the Emotional Regulation & Distress Tolerance. It is true that we as listeners go into a chat not knowing what will await us there – someone who wants to talk a little to feel less lonely, or someone in deep crisis, or even someone who is crossing over into private territory? It is a bit like Forrest Gump and his box of chocolates – you never know what you get. So we as listeners have to carefully balance, in order to neither overextend nor overstep. This is about self-care as well as boundary setting. Maybe to those of you being on 7 Cups for a long time and having lots of experience in the chat format this is simplistic and basic knowledge; for me it still takes consideration and careful examination.

Inspecting the Idea of Ikigai
IDG 7 Cups Hub / by LikeRingsInWater

...See more The Ikigai, with its four overlapping circles arranged to form a central focal point, is clear and simple in its design. It takes into account so much more than the usual question 'What do you want to do with your life?' Yet talking to college students, it seems to feel overwhelming to them. One put it bluntly: 'I can fill in the four outer rings, but there seems to be no link between those things. They are completely different spheres." With some others, two or three circles overlapped. We started discussing the hypothesis, if their Ikigai could be bi-fold. For example, would it still count as an Ikigai to have an employment that fulfils three circles, plus one volunteer commitment that fills the fourth? What would happen to the overlap areas in-between these circles, would they still exist? So these are my questions to you - looking forward to hearing your thoughts.

How to Live with a Disappointing Strength Profile - and Maybe Even Enjoy the Ride (IDG)
IDG 7 Cups Hub / by LikeRingsInWater

...See more In one of the first steps of the IDG path, the link to the VIA Character Strength Test pops up - and boy, we all love taking a good test, don't we? This one, though, I remember distinctly, because it was in a special situation I encountered this the first time: During the peak of COVID, in the middle of masks and homeschooling and half-information. At the time, I studied Laurie Santos 'Science of Happiness' online course, and this very test was part of the coursework, upon which daily assignments were based. I also remembered this test for a very different reason: In general, when we take one of these tests, we have a fairly accurate conception of what the results will be. We are aware of how we tick, and what gets us going, and what excites us and what doesn't, and so on. So without too much checking or reading up on the key strength as such, in order to stay as neutral as possible and not skew results, I filled in the questions. And I got the result. And I was shocked. My first reaction was (and I am not exaggerating): The algorithm is broken. My top strength came out as 'Appreciation of Beauty and Excellence'. Immediately, I associated this with vanity and conceit and some superficial, shallow personality... So, why me? Why couldn't I have 'a cooler, more impressive top strength? I read the text, it related how this can indeed be perceived as a strength. I read it two times, three times. So, yes, it is about perceiving, taking in the world, seeing things or acts - kindness, moral goodness, skill. All very nice, but still... it stung a bit. And maybe, just maybe, because of that, I never completely forgot about it. It lived in a tiny bubble in my head, and from time to time it would float up, like a soap bubble out of nowhere. For example, when I learned about MBSR (mindfulness based stress reduction) - there is a link. When I would visit an art exhibition and fall in love with a painting - it is this. Or when we would pick up some fallen blooms from a tree - again, here it is. So, yes, the test might have been pointing me onto something I did not see at all, which actually makes it all the more valuable. And, yes, I did it again after all this years and guess what - with the exact same result. Thanks for bearing with me (this turned into a long-ish text). Here are my questions for you: - Have you taken this particular test? - Were you surprised by the results or did it confirm your understanding of yourself?
