Where Compassion and Distress Tolerance Overlap
Reflecting on my (still very limited) chat experience and some conversations going on in the listener forums, I have been wondering about the interplay between the two fields of Emotional Regulation & Distress Tolerance (Being), and Empathy and Compassion (Relating).
So given the assumption that we are all here on 7 Cups as listeners because we want to be there for someone in distress, as a mental support voice and a patiently listening ear. We learn and practice active listening skills, and try to make someone feel seen and heard. We try to support them by making them see a way forward for themselves, without us giving advice or opinion, thus making them feel in control of the situation.
Now adding to the above mentioned Empathy and Compassion field the Emotional Regulation & Distress Tolerance. It is true that we as listeners go into a chat not knowing what will await us there – someone who wants to talk a little to feel less lonely, or someone in deep crisis, or even someone who is crossing over into private territory? It is a bit like Forrest Gump and his box of chocolates – you never know what you get.
So we as listeners have to carefully balance, in order to neither overextend nor overstep. This is about self-care as well as boundary setting. Maybe to those of you being on 7 Cups for a long time and having lots of experience in the chat format this is simplistic and basic knowledge; for me it still takes consideration and careful examination.

No, you completely make very important and valid points.
It's about navigating new territory with every new chat we have.
Learning what went well.
What didn't go well.
And what can go better.
Self reflection is important and taking regular breaks for yourself in between listening.
Keeping your own personal boundaries firm.
All you can do is your best
Welcome and thank you for being a listener 💚🤗

@Amanda84 Thank you for your supportive words - I am still feeling my way around, as the chat format is new to me, and it is by its very nature much faster paced than what I am used to. And also trying to give my best that actually does help someone feel supported can go wrong, or members want to 'swallow you whole'... it is a very novel experience for me, that I am still navigating.
The internship opportunity is amazing, and I am learning A LOT.
@LikeRingsInWater
I'm so happy to hear that and you are welcome 💚🤗
@LikeRingsInWater Thanks for bringing this up! I also find myself at a crossroad, on one hand, it's such a rewarding feeling navigating new chat thats is unlike the ones you already had, the one which challenges you and forces to remember what you learned and maintain the composure and not forget the role you have, but on the other hand, after building some connection with several members, checking up on them and maintaining contact throughout the time makes it quite dreadful to take on new chats as what worked before might not work anymore, it also requires time to build new rapport and it instills some little sense of powerlesness or even hopelesness, but that's when I realise I just need a break. Indeed, a good comparison - every chat is a box of chocolate😄
