...See more Many people, including John Muir and Henry David Thoreau have written about the healthful effects of a walk in the woods. The Japanese have actually been studying it for a few years; the beneficial effect of the sights, sounds, even smells; the aromatics given off by conifers, on mood, blood pressure, even T-cells and immune response. They've developed a process of meditative, mindful hiking they call Shinrin-yoku; "forest bathing", where you really attend to the full experience of being out in nature. Think of a hybrid between light day-hiking and Thich Nhat Hanh's mindfulness walking meditation. Possibly the most difficult part is finding companions who are comfortable with (or even capable of) being quiet; it's an activity that is sometimes be best done in solitude. https://www.shinrin-yoku.org/ https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19568835

Depression Support / by Piobair

...See more I've a Hx of major recurrent depression, and some sort of disautonomia/neurologic disfunction/dementia. When I became ill, we moved to be closer to family, but there's no support here, only my mate. She loves me fiercely, but has very prejudicial attitudes towards depression, making me feel very averse to even broaching the subject with her. Anyway, I've been having an increasingly difficult time over the past couple of weeks (at least), and having been chased out of bed by nightmares at 2:00 AM, am just having a hard time right now.
