...See more Hello, everyone! Many of us have struggled with depressive episodes throughout our lives. Coping during these hard times is challenging and getting out of these episodes can take weeks- if not months. That’s why I wanted to share with you a technique I find very helpful: the depression tool box. What is the depression tool box? It is simply a box, which we have filled with specific things that can be proven helpful during difficult times. In other words, it’s a way to prepare to cope with an upcoming depressive episode. What things can I put in my depression tool box? * Snacks During a depressive episode, buying groceries or preparing meals is something we often don’t have the energy to do. That’s why having some snacks in our tool box may be a good idea. Some crackers or some biscuits, for example, may help us feel more energized during hard times. * Water (or anything that keeps us hydrated) It’s really important to stay hydrated at all times. Having some small water bottles or some cartons of juice might be useful! * Wet wipes or perfume Taking a shower while feeling down isn’t the easiest thing ever. Some wet wipes or some perfume may make us feel cleaner when we can’t shower properly. * Clothes Clean clothes can help us feel better too! A clean shirt, for instance, feels amazing to put on after wearing the same clothes for many days in a row. * Useful numbers You can include the numbers of people you can call (or even the numbers of your local helplines) written in small pieces of paper, in case you feel like you need to talk to someone. * A note to yourself What words do you think you would like to hear during a difficult time? Write them down, creating a letter to your future self, which will be soothing and encouraging. * A notebook, pens, markers These tools will help you express your pain and get things off your chest. * Things related to your hobbies It could be your camera or some seeds which you can plant! In general, something you are interested in. * Objects that remind you of better days. Souvenirs, small gifts you’ve been given etc… they all remind you that you’ve seen brighter days. Life was better at some point and you will experience happiness again. What would you put in your personal tool box? I hope my post was helpful. Remember that you are not alone; you deserve love, respect and kindness.
