Autism Evaluation--is it worth it?

...See more Hello! For over a year I have thought that I may be autistic. I mentioned it to my old therapist and my current psychiatrist, who both said it is possible. But I am doubting whether getting an evaluation is 'worth it'. I am in my mid-20s. My family members don't see the 'point' in getting one, since there isn't a pill that can make me better and that I'm too old for it to really matter, in their opinion. I am currently unable to hold a job. I thought that if I were to get a diagnosis, my potential future workplace could provide me with accommodations. But even then, I'm not sure if that's enough to help me. I might never be able to keep a traditional job. I have heard that I may likely be on a waitlist for years, and insurance doesn't cover the evaluation--so it could potentially cost $1,000+ for my family. I have read other accounts from people, especially adult women, about how hard it is for them to get formally diagnosed, since a lot of places are only equipped for diagnosing children, and typically young boys. It may just be imposter syndrome, but I am hesitant to self-diagnose myself. Even though I highly relate and share many of the same struggles. If you are autistic, I'd love to hear your thoughts! If you decided to not get an evaluation, what helped you make that decision? If you were formally diagnosed, what was the experience like?
