Autism Evaluation--is it worth it?

Hello! For over a year I have thought that I may be autistic. I mentioned it to my old therapist and my current psychiatrist, who both said it is possible. But I am doubting whether getting an evaluation is 'worth it'.

I am in my mid-20s. My family members don't see the 'point' in getting one, since there isn't a pill that can make me better and that I'm too old for it to really matter, in their opinion.

I am currently unable to hold a job. I thought that if I were to get a diagnosis, my potential future workplace could provide me with accommodations. But even then, I'm not sure if that's enough to help me. I might never be able to keep a traditional job.

I have heard that I may likely be on a waitlist for years, and insurance doesn't cover the evaluation--so it could potentially cost $1,000+ for my family.

I have read other accounts from people, especially adult women, about how hard it is for them to get formally diagnosed, since a lot of places are only equipped for diagnosing children, and typically young boys.

It may just be imposter syndrome, but I am hesitant to self-diagnose myself. Even though I highly relate and share many of the same struggles.

If you are autistic, I'd love to hear your thoughts!

If you decided to not get an evaluation, what helped you make that decision? If you were formally diagnosed, what was the experience like?

@classicPotato258 Hey! I’m worried that my social anxiety may be more than it seems and I also want to get an evaluation but I worry if it will be for nothing. I haven’t gotten into the work force yet but I’m worried that these things may affect me when I graduate. I also relate a lot to some of the symptoms but I worry that it’s not enough and they will say nothing is wrong and it will all for nothing. Hopefully we find out more! I just want to say that I understand you and you’re not alone in this feeling.

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply! It means a lot. :)

I worry there's nothing that can be done for me, but I've been struggling lately, too. I'm just going to try and do what I can in the meantime.

And one day when I have the funds, try and go for a diagnosis (after getting an additional opinion from a new psychiatrist or therapist).

I hope you can get what you need! Talking to others and professionals may help; and they might be able to refer you to get a formal diagnosis ^^ I'm hoping things go well for you

@classicPotato258 Welcome! I know people have had similar thoughts and there have been posts both here in disability support, plus there's Support Plus which has an autism topic, so you may be interested in exploring there too.

I believe if you feel that you do have autism and it's having an impact on your day to day life, making you feel like doing things like other people is too hard, then I would say it's worth going for a diagnosis.

Hi, I'm 17 and got diagnosed about a month ago . It has made a huge difference. I have found my place in the world, and can be more kind to myself. It also helps me to get accomodations.

It does take a while - in the UK averages 2 years. I do not agree with what you said about only equipped for children - after about four years of age, all assessments are the same. you still have to look at a random frog book hehe.

I would say go for it. I have zero regrets.
