Sad, scared, lonely, feeling like I have no one to talk to

...See more I have a lot on my plate right now and what makes it so much more difficult is that I don't feel as though I have anyone I can really talk to or to just be a shoulder to cry on. I think my situation would maybe be more tolerable if I had more of a support system, but I don't and when I've tried to reach out, I just get brushed off. My mom passed away in November 2007 after fighting brain cancer for almost a year and a half. It was a horrible experience for her and our family - one that I would not wish on anyone. I miss her terribly to this day and when I am feeling especially sad or worried about something, the missing her feels even worse, if that's possible. My older sister and I do not get along well a lot of the time - she picks on me, constantly finds fault and takes out her frustrations on me, which is very hurtful - and my older brother always is too busy to make any time for me. He never calls me to check on me or see how I am doing and when I've called him, he's busy doing something else or says he'll call back, but doesn't. I've been having a hard time today dealing with the recent death of my dog - we buried her today - and with worrying about my dad who is fighting a serious illness. He is doing well now, but I am always fearful about the future. My grandparents have all passed away and I don't have any aunts, uncles or cousins close by, with the exception of one much older cousin who I like but don't get to see often. As far as friends go, I don't have a single close friend I can just call whenever. Most everyone I know is married with children and extended families of their own and my friends consist mainly of "friends" on Facebook - people I used to know through school or work, but who live elsewhere or who are so busy with their own lives that they don't have time to get together or even chat on the phone. I don't have a husband, boyfriend, children or in-laws either and am very lonely. Right now I feel terribly sad, worried and alone and I keep having this nagging feeling that I'm going to be alone for the rest of my life and be one of those people that nobody misses or cares about. It's truly awful feeling this alone and as though you don't have a support system or someone to reassure you when you're sad or worried. I just don't know what to do or how to make things better. Reaching out to others has never worked for me. Making the effort gets tiring after awhile when no one ever reaponds or reciprocates, At the moment, my only real friend is my other dog - a chubby little English bulldog - and I love him dearly, but I just wish I had a bigger and stronger support system.😞

Feeling sad and scared

...See more I'm having a hard time right now for several reasons and I'm finding it difficult to be even the slightest bit happy or get any enjoyment out of anything. I feel very lonely and as though my family has gotten so much smaller since my mom and grandparents have all passed away. I have two older siblings, one of whom I don't see much even though we all live in the same city. I don't have any aunts or uncles close by and only five first cousins, all of whom are several years older or younger and three of whom don't live here. I'm single and don't have any children, either. I also really don't have any close friends that I can spend time with or just call up whenever I need a friend. I have "friends" on social media - old friends/acquaintances from school and former teachers or co-workers - that I rarely see or haven't seen in years, but not anyone I can just call up out of the blue or rely on if I need to. My dog was diagnosed with lymphoma in September and has been undergoing treatment, which the vet said typically buys them about a year. She turns 6 next month, so is very young for something like this. She had been doing well on the treatment except for a few delays due to low blood counts, but the vet said she was responding well to the medications. We found out day before yesterday that the medications are no longer working and she has started to relapse, so he has switched her to a different drug to try and get her back into remission. To make matters much worse, in early December, my dad was hospitalized and diagnosed with a blood disorder that is a sort of precursor to leukemia. He has been undergoing treatment for that. I'm beyond sad and scared with everything that has been going on and it's made even worse by the fact that my family seems so small, I don't have much of a support system and I do not have a husband or boyfriend to lean on. I worry a lot and want to cry all of the time and feel very scared and alone. Has anyone else ever found themselves in a similar situation? Did you find anything that really helped you?

...See more My mom passed away from brain cancer 14 years ago and that was a horrible experience that I would not wish on anyone or any family. I miss her every single day and although I have been able to go on with life mostly, I still feel this profound emptiness and sadness due to her not being here. Now my dad is facing a very serious illness and though he's doing well enough that you might not know he's ill just by looking at him, that's something that has been weighing heavily on me. I feel sad, worried and scared and really don't have anyone to talk to about things or just be a shoulder to cry on. My brother is all caught up in his kids' activities and isn't available much even though at the start of this, he said he would be around more. My sister also has been unpleasant to me most of the time and it makes the situation that much more difficult. I think in part it is because she resents me. I also think it's because she is single at the moment and doesn't have a husband or boyfriend to keep her occupied, so I become a target for her frustrations and anger. Needling, criticizing, taking jabs at and just generally being mean and unpleasant. Nothing I do is right and I always feel exhausted after being around her. I cannot avoid being around her, as I live in the same house as my dad and she is over here every day from about lunchtime until late at night. To make things worse, I don't have a boyfriend/husband or children myself and no close friends I can call on. I have "friends" on Facebook - people I grew up, went to school or worked with - but everyone else is married with families of their own and has groups of friends that they are already close with. I always feel as though I am on the outside. I don't have one single person I could call up out of the blue if I needed to. I have an aunt who has been supportive as much as she can be, but she lives in another state and she is busy too, so I do not get the opportunity to talk with her as much as I'd like to. Right now I just feel horribly alone and sad and scared and I feel like I don't have a support system of any kind. It's very hard to deal with. Has anyone else ever found themselves in a similar situation?

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) and therapeutic light boxes

...See more Has anyone else experienced Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)? If so, what are your symptoms and do they usually begin the same time of year every year? Have you tried a therapeutic light box and has it helped at all? I've noticed I start feeling more emotional, sad, less motivated and less energetic around the same time every year (September) and though I've never been formally diagnosed with SAD, I feel as though I may be experiencing it to some degree. It also could be due to the reminders this timemof year brings - my mom passed away 14 years ago in November and had been ill for nearly a year and half. The last couple of months before she passed away were especially difficult for her. I am wondering if one of the therapeutic light boxes would be helpful or if they don't really do much good.

...See more Anyone else just feel lonely and frustrated at how their life has turned out or is going in their 40s? Although I'd very much like to be married and have a family of my own, for whatever reason it just hasn't ever happened for me and I know that at my age (44), it's not likely to ever happen - at least not the becoming a parent part. To top it off, my mom passed away 13 years ago and I miss her terribly to this day. In the past 4 years, my remaining grandparents (mom's parents) have both passed away and I don't have any aunts or uncles who live near here and only one cousin (14 years older) whom I only see or speak occasionally. Most of my friends are happily married with families of their own - some with babies/preschoolers and others with teenagers - and tend to only relate to others in the same situation.
