Need Tips for Helping Loved One through Home Opioid Detox

...See more To be clear, I'm not looking for medical advice. I'm hoping that those of you who have been through detox or have helped someone with it can share your experiences on what worked and what didn't, so I can better help my loved one through it. I'm basically looking to put together a kit of supplies to have on hand and would like some idea of what might happen and when. To give background: My loved one is smoking heroin- "cut back" to somewhere between 0.5-1g/ day (was apparently double that), with withdrawal kicking in 4-5 hours after each use. He says he's using it purely to avoid withdrawal at this point and he is personally motivated to quit. He's been using for 1.5 years. He also picked up meth about six months ago, supposedly to combat the fatigue caused by the heroin- he was trying to keep his job and could no longer get up in the morning. He says he's not addicted to it though... that I have no info on otherwise. He is under the care of a counselor. His counselor seems good and they appear to have open communication. The counselor put us in touch with a physician and will be meeting with my loved one regularly after- they have an outpatient addiction rehab program he'll be part of. The doctor okayed outpatient detox. We can't afford in-patient. The doc prescribed [Medication name], which will be taken for a little over a week. Then, he's getting switched to something else (forgot the name) to help him get off the [Medication name]. He must be off his regular "dose" for 24 hours before starting the [Medication name], so it sounds like he'll be coping with some pretty strong withdrawal symptoms before he can get any relief. However, the doctor did not give us any timeline or any tips for dealing with the detox. It was mostly "Take this and see me when you're done." I'd like to have supplies ([Medication name], stomach meds, etc) on hand and be mentally prepared for the road ahead. This is where you guys come in. If you have personal experiences to share that may help or know what brought you/ your loved one some comfort while detoxing, please let me know. Thank you!
