Does stress cause depression?

...See more It's only the beginning of the year and I've been stressed with college and work while trying to have a social life or a relationship. I'm actually thinking of withdrawing from one of my classes because of the added workload (plus it's not needed for my major anymore.) I just have so much to do in all my other classes. Plus I have been talking and seeing this guy I met online in the beginning of February , all was going well but he hasn't answered my texts recently. I'm guessing he is "ghosting" me but I'm not about to go social media stalking or go to his place to find answers. I just let it go. I recently put in a request at work to cut my days to 4 instead of working 5 days a week to see if that helps. I find myself crying at random times when I'm by myself, not eating and not sleeping well. I've lost about 5+lbs this week already (didn't workout). Short story: I've been single for a long time. Never been able to find the right guy. Have a full load in college and work after classes and end up staying up late to finish homework, projects or study. Everyone around me seems to be in happy relationships or have happy lives. And I'm just here struggling. I'm the kind of person that doesn't really talk about my feelings to others because I don't want them to think I'm a burden. Plus most of my close friends have moved away and i don't want to talk about this to my family because they might not take it seriously. I've thought about going to sleep and never waking up. I have no one to talk to that I can trust tontake this seriously. The guy I was seeing helped me the first time I had this problem but seems to not be available nowadays. I'm waiting for someone to see through my fake smiles and see that I'm broken on the inside. I don't know if it's depression kicking in or just stress, but this feeling keeps coming back. I'm just not happy with life anymore and want to leave. Everyone sees me as a strong person but I'm weak on the inside. I don't want to go to pills or alcohol Everytime I feel this way. But i have no one to talk to around me.

Is this depression or just sadness?

...See more Almost a week ago, I couldn't eat nor sleep for 2 days (Feb. 13th-14th). Then on the next day, I cried in the bathroom, out of nowhere, as I was getting ready to start my day. I called out of work for the first time in the years I've been there and didn't want to get out of the house. I called a friend to see if he wanted to "have lunch" that day, which we ended up eating lunch at his place but I didn't feel like eating. So we talked and again, I cried. Told him I felt this big weight on my shoulder and that I felt empty and had certain thoughts every now and then. After he gave me advice, I felt just a little better. I thought maybe this isn't depression but just sadness/stress of feeling alone and having so much to do with school, work, and life in general. Today, I felt that same feeling. That this big weight on my shoulder came back and i can't lift it up, I can't eat, working out or running makes me feel somewhat better. I also feel that I'm stuck in one place while everyone around me is moving on and i can't take it anymore. I cried just thinking about all of that. I'm the type of person that people would think "oh she has a good life and is hardworking, never sad" when they look at me, but i'm the complete opposite on the inside. So I just need to know if this is actually depression or is it sadness/stress that will go away. I want to give it a couple of weeks before I decide anything.
