Not a Good Night
Hi everyone,
I'm not exactly sure why I'm here. I'm really such an introvert and am not the type of person who feels comfortable in groups. I've always hated writing too, it's just hard for me.
I've had depression and anxiety since childhood. I've tried therapy. It seems to me that one really needs to find the right fit in order for it to be helpful. And there's really no way to do that in the system we have other than trail and error. I've tried medication as well.
Throughout much of my adult life I've had one or two close friends. For the past decade I've had zero close friends. I wasn't mature enough to have close romantic relationships and I always knew they weren't right so I never married. No kids. I'm so devastated about this now but I knew I couldn't be a great mother at the time. I don't think people should have kids, or pets, if they're not able to love them and care for them well. I've been on one date in the past decade and I'm not sure I really want to go on any. There is nothing clearly "wrong" with me. I'm on the smart side although I can be super dense at times. I used to be considered pretty. Still am really, for my age anyway. I think I'm nice. But people aren't generally interested in standoffish people. They like super friendly, outgoing people even if they're insincere jerks. Maybe it's just because it's easier. Yes ....I'm bitter about it.
I'm literally becoming a hermit now. As I get older I'm struggling more and more with loneliness. Sometimes it barely bothers me. But almost daily it's starting to feel overwhelmingly awful. I feel almost completely isolated from the rest of the world. And I'm losing hope that I'll be able to connect with anyone. The types of relationships and connections I had when I was younger were flawed. Family included. I am losing, or have lost, everybody. I'm trying to start a business from home. Sometimes I don't talk to anyone or leave the house for days at a time.
The person that has been most consistently in my life is my sister. We're only one year apart. When we were growing up we moved all the time. I attended maybe nine schools before I graduated high school and we kind of had to fend for ourselves much of the time. We had a close but complicated relationship. Over the past decade I've come to the conclusion that maybe I never saw her very clearly. I hate the way she treats her husband, her children, me and any other family members she sees regularly. She's either overly nice or mean and manipulative. She's incredibly inconsistent and unpredictable. She does not act this way in public. She's overly nice to any acquaintances. I feel like her teens could be doing so much better if she wasn't so intrusive. Her main concern is their popularity. She loves to discuss what social events they've been invited to and then have them list who wasn't invited and why. She knows all sorts of personal info about their friends. I'm not doing the best job of explaining the situation but I feel really bad for her kids. Her daughter espcially is not doing well. I'm sure most people would say it's none of my business. But it makes me angry and sad. It's hard to be around and I'm horrible at pretending like things aren't happening. Family only gets together at her house. She won't go to anyone elses. So she basically dictates when we all get together.
I think I'm going to have to stop seeing her altogether. But then I'll no longer be able to see her kids. And less time with other family members too. I spent a lot of time with her son when he was younger. I spent almost a decade driving my nephew to his sports practices. My sister loved going to his games but she couldn't commit to taking him to practices so I did it. I miss him. He went back to college today. I rarely see him anymore.
Sometimes relationships with the people around you are too difficult and dysfunctional. They cause more pain than they're worth and it's better to be alone. Maybe I'm expecting too much but I don't think so. It's so confusing. I keep losing people. And it can become harder and harder to meet new people as you get older.
Theres alot you wrote get I relate to. Mainly being a hermit. I go days without saying a word to anyone. I dont leave the house for days at a time. I dont do social media and I don't have family I can go to. They were abusive anyway so I went no contact
I thought I had made a friend awhile back but we had a falling out and she ghosted me and now - I'm afraid to look for more friends because they just leave eventually anyway
I hope things get better for you - maybe you could set up a date with your nephew - I'm not sure where he goes to college so maybe that's not possible - but maybe you could visit where he is some weekend and go out for dinner together - reconnect
I'm not sure where I was planning on going with this reply - I guess I just wanted to say you're not alone with being alone
Be gentle with yourself and your thoughts
@mytwistedsoul thank you for listening!! I too dislike social media. I have a completely blank Facebook page out of necessity and that's it!! I’m sorry to hear about your friend. Losing friends is so hard, especially if you genuinly enjoyed thier company. But it's incredibly hard if you feel like you may never have another and if you're not sure what happened.
I have a couple of casual friends that I’ve known for about a decade. But I don’t speak to them regularly and both friendships are limited for various reasons. One I worked with the other one I shared a common interest/activity with. I think it's hard to have casual friends unless you share a common interest or activity. Which, of course, is much harder when you don't leave the house.
Most people around here have families and tend to make friends with others who have kids and families. Plus it seems to me many people have friends that they don't even like that much. They just want to have somebody to do things with. I get that but I just can't do it.
@Shm77 You're welcome :) I'm allways happy to listen. I usually don't have any good answers but sometimes it's nice to just have someone hear you
I did enjoy her company - she was the first person I opened up to about some of the things I've gone through and I'm as much to blame though - Idk - it's a long story lol and a fairly old one - I need to let it and her go
It's hard to get out of your comfort zone - especially with being an introvert. I usually have these idea's of things to try but then - I chicken out or talk myself out of it
Maybe something like a book club or a cooking class? Our library has - well it used to anyway little classes for stuff you could sign up for in the evenings. Some of it might be alittle - Idk - weird maybe if you're not into it. But the classes are supposed to be small and they're usually not expensive
Even just coming here to socialize - maybe join a few chats or maybe a listener you can talk to on occassion when you feel like it?
@Shm77 Hope we can talk more.
I too don't use social media. I don't have friends or visitors to my place. My main family are my mom & stepdad, and I see them every weekend. Aside from that, I almost enjoy being by myself. People are difficult for me to deal with. Being sensitive, I find people intrusive, vain, extremely talkative, and insincere. Ive always had a word economy- I say what needs to be said most of the time. I was with the wrong woman for 9 years, and in the end she made me look like a fool. She betrayed me for part of a year. When I found out, we split up. That was 4 years ago. I feel like my instincts about people are off, and that makes me want to stay alone.
Hi Everyone, I can relate to you all! I have been a bit of a loner all my life with big trust issues dating back to childhood. I am now in the old person category and live on my own. Since Covid hit I have been overwhelmed by loneliness and anxiety. I retired last year. I was in a very stressful job and was getting sick a lot. At the begining I was quite busy with art, online courses, walking everyday. But now I struggle to find enthusiasm for anything. Wow! Even I'm feeling depressed reading this!
I am not sure about this site, but will give it a go for awhile. Anyone out there?
i am here, unknown. I never had any friends for most of my life. Gave up on it long time ago.
Expectations are a problem for me. I expect those around me to be respectful and decent, but most of the time I am disappointed. These days decency seems to be getting more difficult to find. For a depressive person like myself, social interactions can be draining (depending on the kind of day Im having). And that is made worse when people let you down. It makes you not want to bother with it anymore. Being a hermit has its advantages - my stress level is much reduced when I spend time with my cats instead of out in public.
@Shm77 I get what you are saying. Good news is that you have some people here who are here to listen to you. We may not have the answers, and we don't, but we listen. I am in that same situation you are in. My friendships don't last over a year or two. I am isolated too. what is ironic is that i want to start a business. I stopped trying to make friends. Maybe that is how to make friends, is when you stop trying and let happen naturally. I dont know. I hope you will remember us incase you need to talk.
