Academic depression and loneliness

Hello, I am a middle aged man, feeling academic depression and losing sight of myself and life. This PhD and the career it leads to was a dream but I feel so lost now. I'm anxious, frequently enough that I've started seeking therapy.

Is there a sponsor out there who has completed a PhD and might know what I'm going through? I can't really talk about this with the people in my surroundings so I feel very alone. Someone to talk about my therapy sessions (when I find some...), someone to remind me of why I'm putting myself through this.... someone who can brainstorm ways to kick myself into gear. I've tried so many things and they just aren't fulfulling, but I need to make a change and it needs to be long-term so I can have a successful career in academia/research.

Pls message me and help if possible. I can’t thank you enough.

Hello Raymond34,

Wanted to reach out and let you know you are not alone in this.

While I personally have not experienced Academia issues you have described. But have worked in the Academia in graduate realm (physics).

There have been a few whom did describe such matters and a few of them had stated that the talked with their advisor.

Being a middle aged man, there used to be an “area’ or group on campus which is for “older adults” as such. I wish I could remember the name of the group. At the time I wasn’t really interested. I just wanted to complete what I needed and move on. It wasn’t a Greek Life but seemed to be “like” that. The campus I was on had a building just for them.

Hope that helps
