Diversity in Relationships and RSD

I have RSD and I’m trying to learn more about how things are wired. I have a questions that I hope to find answers for

why do I feel like I can’t manage to have more than one close friend? Even though I have some good people around me, but I find myself incapable of interacting with them on a level that is considered to be close. I find myself more comfortable on being around one friend.

And as @LostTurtle2 replied to a thread : How do I stop “hyper focusing on one relationship and over reacting to things”.

Are you medicated? It seems that RSD and hyperfocus are part of the ADHD experience and how it makes the brain work. The only way to 'hack' it effectively is apparently through medication (or at least, it is what helps the most).

Two others ideas that came to me:

- look for 'Polyvagal Theory' online. It can help you learn strategies to self-regulate when you are emotionally triggered

- the 'neurodivergeant_insights' account on Ins Ta Gram has a very well detailed post on RSD and how to tackle it

Best of luck! 😊

Hi Sara,

to be honest, I find myself only able to keep 2 friends I'd classify as "close". And while I could hypothesize for quite a while why that is the case, I'd focus elsewhere – Is it really that weird or a cognitive distortion? Is it limiting, or causing struggles I need to overcome?

To be honest, talking to all sorts of people, I don't find it that uncommon, for various reasons. And while it may also be that I built a "bubble of similar people" around myself, I don't find that worrying. I take it as a fact.

When you identify specific issues (i.e. a fear of ending up alone, or having some unmet social needs come to my mind), you can then asses how problematic it really is, and also find some things to do to change it and ease your mind.

Good luck & be well!
