I don't think I'm going to make it

I don't think I'll make it

To my daughter's prom,

Or my sons big game.

I don't think I'll make it

To their graduation days,

And I'm the only one to blame.

I don't think I'll make it

To see the man he becomes,

Or the woman that she'll be.

I don't think I'll make it

To become a grandfather,

That far I cannot see.

I don't think I'll make it

To their wedding days,

Then they might ask why.

I don't think I'll make it,

But at least I'll know,

I tried.

@OrigiNolan

heartbreakingly beautiful

unguarded

the structure of repetition is what really made me feel feelings as I went thru the poem

Poems are my favorite way into somebody's weaknesses.

Are poems your thing?

I never thought poems were my thing. I enjoyed literature classes up and into university. I like to write, so lately with everything coming to a tipping point of "do I throw the towel in or not"... I felt I had to get this off my chest. Express something about not getting to be there for them if I end up not being there for them.

@OrigiNolan
one more comment, I hope that is ok?

That line made me suddenly think about my legacy or being remembered. Just another thing to fret about at nite in a ponderous state of projecting into the future. sigh, smh...guess that's a common feeling, heh heh

Oh, You found yourself enjoyed literature class in high school and college. Got to break it to you - I think you already are a poet, but you can deny it to yourself for a while longer. heh!
I don't know you, yet, but like... there is the thought that your future is cloudy. Maybe your poem can mean 1) fear of dying prematurely.
How I also took it was 2) a father who cannot imagine  experiencing your son or daughter's life milestones while being a parent who is ill, the strangeness of having a burden where you cannot be the perfect rock for them, who's at ease and very present in the moment. And who could blame you, as a kid we each dreamed of being a good parent.

@OrigiNolan It's been several weeks, you shared your poem 1 month ago today. I regret not circling back sooner. I can still remember the words of a motivational speaker, Dr. K, a "deadbeat" who changed his ways and worked to get his MD license and is now a psychiatrist, practicing for 15 years. Yadda yadda.

What's matters, is that Dr. K knows that girls and boys, teens and adults in our country (in America) are suffering in our heads and hearts from worries or relationships changing, and tech addiction is the biggest coping mechanism, and suspicion of others is very high.

There is a wave of grief as we interact with people less and less and have fewer trusting or consistent relationships. So of course people get shocked, and swept into sorrow, wistfulness, we know something has changed "for the worse". But the challenges are made to be a way to grow a little stronger. You are still worth something and I am still worth something. We can be redeemed. Like, people in far worse positions have changed their habits and their effort was rewarded- they actually healed. Every day people who suffer are We are innocent deep down, and want to be good. We are human. To be human is to want to fit in. <3 to have a good story.

Something's not right in your story, lately? You're worried? Me, too. Me too.
