Misanthropy
It's a very odd and specific thing but I definitely feel like I suffer from it.
There is so much negative in the world, every single newspaper focuses completely on negative. Everyone does, scams, murder, everything.
It's just all absolutely awful and I truly hate the human race as a result.
Working in retail, I see every type of person and it gives me absolutely no hope in the future for humans. It genuinely makes me depressed.
I understand. Very much.
Misanthropy doesn't need to be a cause for depression, though it certainly lends itself to that. You can also use your revulsion toward the plague of this planet that we call "humanity" as a source of mental energy, a kind of drive. A few noteworthy individuals have done just that; their achievements have ensured they will be remembered down through the ages...especially by those like us.
If you are leaning toward misanthropy, it would help you to explore & learn. It even has a philosophical dimension that may appeal to you. This is a fine introduction...when I had that same realization about people years ago, I was lucky enough to find it in a local bookstore. I still refer to it every so often.
If you'd like to look further, I would suggest
- The Devil's Dictionary by Ambrose Bierce, the greatest misanthrope the US has spawned so far
- The Misanthrope's Rules by Dawn Banks (not as well written but also less dated, & liberal--as opposed to King's paleoconservatism) You need a Kindle or similar app to read it, though
- the obligatory Wikipedia page
- link to free copy (in various formats) of Hobbes' Leviathan, which I recommend
Good luck on the path.
I understand that very well too. That's why I no longer read newspapers, don't watch the news and have become very withdrawn.
