This Conversation Could Save a Life

If someone tells you they're struggling with suicidal thoughts, don't ignore it, minimize it, or assume someone else will help.

Sometimes the most important thing you can do is simply stay with them and listen.

  • Thank them for trusting you.
  • Let them know they're not alone.
  • Listen without judging or trying to immediately fix everything.
  • Ask them directly if they're thinking about suicide. Asking does not put the idea in their head. It helps you understand how serious the situation is.
  • Encourage them to contact someone they trust, a therapist, a doctor, or a crisis service.
  • If they have a plan and believe they may act on it soon, treat it as an emergency. Stay with them if possible and help them contact emergency services or get to the nearest emergency department.

You don't have to have all the answers. You just have to be willing to care.

One conversation, one phone call, or one person choosing to stay can make the difference between life and death.

If you're the one struggling, please know this: you are not a burden, and you do not have to carry this alone. Reach out to someone. There are people who want to help, even if it doesn't feel that way right now.

Check on your people. Listen with your heart. Your presence may save a life.
