Treatment resistant depression

When a depression has lasted for months and hasn't reacted to meds and therapy you lose hope. But there are treatment options. The one that is the oldest and globally used is electro convulsive therapy. They are nothing at all like you see in movies. An anesthesiologist puts you to sleep. The electric current lasts a few seconds and then a one minute seizure. That's it. Wake up 40 minutes later. It's true there's some memory loss. They have saved my life several times. Worst part is getting up for it before the sun even rises. There's another one called TMS where magnets rotate rapidly around you head. I wouldn't do it but there's a reason the FDA approved it. Then there's ketamine. Started as a bull tranquilizer. It's pretty miraculous but some not FDA approved so not covered by insurance except for the Ketamine based drug Spravato in the US. A depression settled after a manic episode in May. 2 hospital stays in 3 months. We were going to do another round of electro convulsive treatments but I was talked into giving Spravato a try. I was skeptical but it has really helped. More time consuming than ECT. I've also develop more to my support network with the girls at the clinic. The treatment is relaxing and I look forward to it. ECTs made me a nervous wreck despite know everything going to happen. The history of modern psychiatry has seen treatments come and go but these will be around longer. So just because a treatment is called treatment resistant doesn't mean there aren't options. And these treatments plus dozens of medications prove just how organic a physical these mental problems are.
