Positive actions

March 29th, 2016

Hi all

I am depressed but haven't seen a councillor. What would you suggest as a good starting place to get positive help.

I have tried a few random things. Meditation, improving my diet and sleeping habits.

Feel kind of like if I ask the doctor to refer me to a therapist or something I will end up sitting around like someone at an AA meeting discussing how sad we all are.

What were your first steps?

Hey, well done on the steps you've taken so far :)

For me, counselling is one option. Talking to your GP another. And when coping with depression, I wouldn't discount anything. But also, as you are identifying, there are things you can do to help yourself. The self help guides on here helped me understand my thinking a bit more. The idea that you can 'change the way you think to change the way you feel', was quite a revelation, but it is true. I also found a self help book to address self esteem - it's very easy when depressed to hear that inner critic even louder, and for me, addressing that has helped me think more kindly of myself, and feel more positive as a result.

But talking truly is great therapy. Just getting that stuff out, being supported to look at it for what it is, and considering how you can overcome whatever's bringing you down. So get talking - friend, family, listener, counsellor - a problem shared truly brings relief.

Thank-you for your good comments. Makes sense and I will look into finding someone to talk to about it a bit more.
