I have never been good at self care. I usually stay in a dark room and start stay covered up to deal with things. However, recently I started doing digital art writing inspirational quotes in calligraphy or brush script and some other art. Researching and looking up how to use different apps and programs looking at other peoples art pulls me back up.
Always making sure that I take time for myself and my needs going first have truly made me less stressed out and upset
1) Choose my favorite scent that I'd like to use that day– I love food-y scents so I pick up a food-y smelling bath salt bag from my favorite online store and dump a bit into the bath. Don't forget to add the cake smelling bubble bath mixture for a creamier scent!
2) Grab my phone and turn on some engaging YouTube videos. I grip my phone tightly and keep it safely maneuvered over my body while in the tub to reduce the chance of accidents.
3) Stay in for thirty minutes to an hour, dry off, go to bed. Here I will do some visualization, meditation or mindfulness exercises.
4) Sleep to the best of my ability. I can always grab a cup of coffee in the morning, but the most important part is sleeping! Of course, afternoon naps are also good.
5) Face washing, cleaning up anything on my body (for chronic skin illness reasons) and taking medicine are also important. These can be done through out the day, though.
I think that sums it up pretty well!
Morning workout
Spending time outdoors
Volunteering with animals
I start my day by making coffee and chatting with my sister in law who also happens to be my best friend!!! We help support one another the best we can. I try to draw or play video games when I feel like I haven't done anything for myself. And if I cant actually find the time for those ill usually blast music while I clean and sing along. I find music to be extremely therapeutic for me!!!
Self care ideas
I am in need of what constitutes self care so I can start doing self care.
I have a really hard time doing anything lately. No motivation.
@Gardengal462 self care is anything from brushing your teeth or making sure you dont feel stressed. Self care doesnt just mean putting on a fancy face mask and all your problems will clear up. Sure itll make you feel organised but it defo wont dissolve all your problems. Personally, i feel way achieved even if i get out of bed or brush my hair. Take little steps like brushing the crumbs off your bed and then start to pamper yourself, having a nice bath and a book to read or watch a movie whilst in the bath. You could even speak to a friend or trusted person about your feelings and make sure your feelings arent just trapped inside of you. Anything that makes you feel slightly achieved no matter how small it is helps.
Now I know this might seem shallow, but I found that dressing up or using fancy facial washes are one of the more effective ways to cheer me up. Just... the confidence, you know?
But in the end, nothing helps me more than drawing something, or writing something, or hell, even both! There's a part of me that just adores creating things, like comics, stories, even blog entries. Feeling successful really does a lot for mental health, don't you agree?
Oh, I also like making fancy aesthetic-y to do lists or planners. They're just so pretty and they just make you feel in control of your life... SELF CARE!!!
I make sure that as a bare minimum I take my medication, get a good amount of sleep and eat at least something everyday which might seem like not much but has been a struggle for me in the past and I know that if i dont do one of those three things it severely affects my mental health
I think for the longest time I would just do anything to escape my mind and neglect necessary self-care,so now, even though I'm not able to completely break some of those habbits just yet, i can use them to add healthier ones in. for example, binge-watching shows has now become talking to my friends about those shows and connecting with them on a daily basis for human interaction.
I've started working in the garden more and doing things with my hands, growing plants and moving my body and breahting the fresh air. I've started reading more books and listening to audiobooks. I've started prioritizing little things, like making sure I listen to music or create something, even if it's a little doodle, every day. I've started doing things like laundry a little more often and taking showers for comfort. and in the moment things, like looking at colors and the shape of faces and the beauty of nature and the scent of places and breathing deeply and sitting better and eating again.
I tried sleeping a little more the other night and I think I'm doing better. I'm sleeping again, so that's nice. I'm reading my Bible again, I'm writing again, barely, but it's happening and i think- i think it's going to be okay.
Ugh, getting used to this whole self-care thing. But right now it is going for walks, coloring, reading, word searches and watching Jacksepticeye on Youtube :)
