Adult child in crisis
My 19 year old is in Crisis and doesn’t want my help. I feel helpless and am constantly worrying and so sad and fearful something will happen to her because the crisis bad. Anyone else gone through this and what did you do so you didn’t fall apart
Yes. I am going though this myself. My kids are 26,24,and 18.
All struggle.
The only thing I found that I can do is be available. For listening or a hug or a sounding board.
Knowing they can come to you anytime, anywhere, any reason. No questions asked. No judgment ( that's hard) unconditional love ( that's easy)
I pushed too hard with my 24yr old and almost lost them because of it. I have a system in place when they come to me.
I ask what they need from me. Are they venting, asking for advice or just need to know I'm there. It's hard not to try and fix everything for them. That's part of who I am.
We as parents need to let them figure it out on their own. We can't stand in front as a shield from the world. But we can stand by their side( or just behind) for support.
What kind of help don't they want? They are probably really scared, like you are. It can be difficult to sort through things when your brain is reacting that way.
Remind them that nothing is their fault. Their brain chemicals are off.
I agree that listening regularly without judgement is good. Listening to the same thing over and over again without getting upset is also good. Then just regularly sending "I am thinking of you" messages can be a godsend.@Randall123
Thank you for the input
Keep in touch here as the days go by. You having support will make it easier to support your child. @Randall123
@Randall123 Sometimes a situation feels like getting out of control or stuck in a cage. It's better to take professional help. There are also plenty of volunteers on crisis lines to help people with short-term relief from suicide or talking with a counsellor may also help.
