Antidepressants

I need someone's honest opinion on medications for depressants... it's something that my therapist has recently brought up for me to consider. Are they actually helpful? I know it's not gonna be all sunshine and rainbows just from popping a few pills, but to anyone who has taken them- do they make a difference?
